According to diplomats and Myanmar rights groups, a top UN committee has again prevented Myanmar's military, which took power in a coup in February 2021, from taking the country's seat at the UN.

Two diplomats who spoke on condition of anonymity told the Associated Press that the military's request to take over the seat was delayed by the body's credentials committee.
In a statement, the Myanmar Accountability Project (MAP) stated that diplomats had also informed it that the generals' request for representation had been rejected by the committee, which had begun meeting on November 29.
The action, as described by MAP Director Chris Gunners, was an "important move with great diplomatic and symbolic significance, at a time when the illegal coup leaders are attempting to gain international recognition".
On Friday, a formal announcement is anticipated.
The decision means that K Y-A W Moe Tun, who was appointed Myanmar's UN ambassador by A U N G San S U K Y-I elected government, will keep his position.
Nine nations, including China, Russia, and the United States, make up the UN Credentials Committee. It was meeting in the midst of growing geopolitical tensions over the war in Ukraine, which had made it worry that an increasingly isolated Russia might block any decision supporting him.
The National Unity Government (N U G), which was established by Myanmar politicians who were removed from office in the generals' February 2021 coup, was pushing for its candidate to take over from K Y A-W Moe Tun. The military, which has forged a relationship with Moscow that is getting stronger, backs K Y-A W Moe Tun
According to MAP, the UN must now ensure that the N U G represents the country in all UN bodies and that K Y-A W Moe Tun receives "all rights and privileges" associated with his position as ambassador.
According to MAP, there were "glaring inconsistencies" with the N U G presence in the General Assembly, the military's representation at the International Court of Justice, where Myanmar is being tried for genocide for its treatment of the majority Muslim Rohingya, and an empty seat at the UN Human Rights Council.
Damian Lilly, MAP's protection director, stated, "This latest move must pave the way to resolving these anomalies, which are denying 55 million people in Myanmar the opportunity to be represented at the UN by the government they elected by a landslide in 2020."
This year, K Y-A W Moe Tun voted to denounce Russia's invasion of Ukraine and remove Russia from the UN Human Rights Council.
The overthrow dove Myanmar into emergency as mass fights formed into equipped opposition in the midst of a ruthless military crackdown on those went against to its takeover.
The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, a civil society organization that has been keeping an eye on the situation, says that 2,589 people have been killed since the coup. The military executed four politicians and pro-democracy activists in July, the first time the death penalty has been used in Myanmar since the 1980s.
A U N G San S U K Y-I was detained on the day of the coup and has since been tried multiple times in military courts that are closed to the public. She has previously been given sentences totaling nearly 26 years in jail, nevertheless faces more charges.
A few months after the coup, an attempt was made to kill K Y-A W Moe Tun. Due to the plot, two Myanmar nationals were detained by the US
