When in February 1917, the revolution had overthrown the monarchy in Russia and events had echoed throughout the entire empire. The defeat of Bolsheviks troops in Ukraine coerced Lenin to sign the Brest-Litovsk treaty and recognized the independence of the Ukrainian national republic.
