High blood pressure is the main cause of many diseases, like heart disease and kidney disease.
Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, often leads to death. It is also called a silent killer because there are no specific symptoms. Most people who suffer from it do not know that they have hypertension, and even if they do, they often ignore it.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in India in 2019, 19 crore people in the age group of 30 to 79 years suffered from high blood pressure, and only 7 crore people managed to recover from it. 12 million people live without taking any measures to prevent high blood pressure. A person's systolic blood pressure is 140 mmHg or above, and their diastolic blood pressure is 90 mmHg or above. This common but deadly condition has become a major health problem today, contributing to many diseases such as stroke, heart attack, heart failure, and kidney failure, according to a recent WHO report on blood pressure. Tobacco use and diabetes increase the risk of death from high blood pressure, the report said. However, the prevalence of high blood pressure has been increasing worldwide since 1990 but has decreased between 2010 and 2019.
If physical inactivity continues at the same rate, approximately 24 million new cases of high blood pressure will be reported globally by 2020–2023. Too much salt is like poison to the body. A major cause of high blood pressure is salt consumption, and it is easy to stop using it.
People in India consume an average of 10 suggestions of salt per day. Excessive salt consumption increases blood pressure. In 2019, 20 lakh people died globally due to high blood pressure. High blood pressure is one of the biggest risk factors for heart disease. It accounted for 29% of deaths in India in 2019. About 12 lakh, or 13%, of deaths are due to respiratory diseases.
