The idea of sleeping is usually a much more attractive option. However, getting up early has health benefits such as improved focus, better sleep quality, sustained energy, and productivity.
Getting up early takes effort, but even the last person to wake up can get up early.
Here are some quick tips to get into the habit of getting up early.
1. Go to bed earlier
If you train your body to fall asleep early, you can wake up early every morning. Most adults should aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Anything shorter than this will make it difficult to wake up early.
2. Unplug before bed
Turning your phone or laptop "off" about 30 minutes before bed will help you get a better night's sleep. According to The Sleep Judge, the blue light emitted by screens can alter your body's natural levels of melatonin, making it harder to fall asleep. Getting your bedtime earlier without the influence of technology can make you feel happier and more energetic the next day. 3. Avoid midnight snacks
While some studies have shown that snacking just before bedtime can quell hunger pangs that can occur overnight, other studies have shown that it can reduce unpleasant symptoms such as acid reflux. It's easy to mistake hunger for fatigue, so skip the snack instead and save your appetite for breakfast.
4. Avoid sugary energy drinks and coffee
Energy drinks and coffee can give you the extra energy you need to study, but too much sugar or caffeine before bed can make it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. Limiting sugary sodas, energy drinks, and coffee has been shown to lead to healthier sleep habits. Try switching to water or tea before bed for hydration.
5. Mute your phone
Before you go to bed, turn off your phone ringer or put it into good-night mode. Notifications can wake you up in the middle of the night and trick you into looking at your phone, disrupting your sleep cycle. Those text messages and funny memes linger in the morning.
6. Avoid overnight
Skipping a night of sleep to get work done is not a smart choice. Not only does it lead to fatigue the next morning, but lack of sleep can impair your body's ability to function properly. It often results in cognitive impairment. This proves how important sleep is to our bodies. Don't procrastinate when a big deadline approaches so you don't have to stay up all night to get the work done. You'll quickly realize that the lack of sleep isn't worth it.
7. Sleep with the curtains open
Open the blinds or curtains slightly before going to bed. This allows sunlight to pass through and wake you up more naturally. On sunny days this can be an effective strategy.
8. Set alarm clocks throughout the room
To avoid alarm clock dozing, place your phone or alarm clock in the room across from your bed. This way, when the alarm goes off, I have to get out of bed to turn it off. Wake up on time without having to set an alarm.
It takes time to train your body to wake up early, so don't expect to wake up at 5am every day. Try changing your routine a bit so that you can wake up early. For example, go to bed earlier, change the position of your alarm clock, and skip bedtime snacks and sugary drinks. These small changes will eventually get your body used to waking up early.
