How to Two stories named in Racing, Ferrari and Mercedes, seek to bounce back

In Formula 1, Ferrari and Mercedes are two of the most prestigious, established, and prosperous teams. Their dreams of winning additional world titles in 2022 were shattered by Max Verstappen and the Red Bull squad. Things worsened considerably further this year. Ferrari only won one race in 2023, compared to the Italian team's four victories in the previous campaign. Red Bull's only loss of the year occurred in the Singapore Grand Prix in September. The Mercedes team, which from 2014 until 2021 won eight titles in row, was without race victory. Mercedes hadn't lost game since the 2011 campaign, therefore this was the first time.However, going into 2023, both teams felt their vehicles could compete with Red Bull's RB19 vehicle. Frédéric Vasseur, the new team manager at Ferrari, thought that expectations were "a bit too high."

In qualifying, Verstappen and his teammate, Sergio Pérez, were able to contend with the lightning-fast Ferrari SF-23 driven by Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, which determined the starting order of the race. However, the Ferrari's tyres wore out too soon during races, which caused the vehicle to fall behind Red Bull swiftly and typically end up battling slower vehicles. The engine electrics of the Ferrari also experienced early issues.

Leclerc stated, "We came into this season intending to try and fight for the championship." "We realised immediately after the first race how tough it would be, in contrast to Red Bull who had made significant progress."

Mercedes was also finding that it was in similar situation during the one-week span that separated Formula 1's preseason test driving at the Bahrain circuit and the year's opening race at the same venue. Seven-time Formula world champion Lewis Hamilton sensed danger for Mercedes few weeks ago when he drove the team's new W14 vehicle at its season premiere. Hamilton remarked, "I knew right away that it wasn't championship-winning car." Mercedes debuted 2023 model that had striking resemblance to the model it debuted the year before. Due to its unique design, the automobile was extremely narrow in the vicinity of the cockpit. However, in 2022, it was beset by an aerodynamic issue known as porpoising.

This causes automobiles to bounce or oscillation; the Ferrari and, to lesser extent, the popular Red Bull design experienced this as well. The W14's handling issue, known as oversteer, caused the back end to swing around more quickly than the front due to the overall aerodynamic design's impacts, made it unpredictable. The W14's wing designs added more drag, which made it difficult for the car to attain its top speed as quickly as other vehicles. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff revealed that his team's success in the latter part of the 2022 season was the reason it found itself in this predicament. After Russell won the penultimate race of that year, Mercedes concluded that its previous design might still be useful. "We thought we could solve this," Wolff remarked. "Remain true to the car's concept and improve your performance in 2023.

"However, testing immediately showed that wasn't the case." Mercedes and Ferrari improved their 2023 automobiles using extremely distinct public relations methods. Additionally, Ferrari was using design that was quite identical to its previous season's model. Red Bull's successful 2022 design was already being copied by Aston Martin and McLaren, among other teams. Only few days later, Mercedes promised to make significant improvements to the design of their cars after Hamilton and Russell only finished fifth and seventh in the first race. Then, in an unexpected decision, it reinstated James Allison, the engineer in charge of automobile design and former technical director, in that role in lieu of Mike Elliott, who hadoversaw the W13 and W14 cars' designs. Elliott replaced Allison as chief technical officer prior to his October departure from Mercedes. In late May, Mercedes debuted significant redesign for the W14 car at the Monaco race. This included number of the aerodynamic design elements that made Red Bull's car so successful. Mercedes then proceeded to improve its lap times, but not enough to win races, finishing in second and third place in six of the final 16 races. Mercedes's only podium finish in the first six races came from Hamilton's second place finish in the Australian race.

Russell and Hamilton agreed to fresh deals in 2023 to continue racing for Mercedes through the end of 2025. This "showed my commitment to the team," according to Hamilton. In 2024, he expressed his belief that the squad can overtake Red Bull. In the beginning, Ferrari denied altering the styling of its 2023 vehicles. That's why it was shocking when it, too, modified the SF-23 to make it resemble Red Bull's top vehicle at the race in Barcelona in June. Similar to Mercedes, Ferrari experienced better success; in the latter 11 rounds, it had seven podium finishes, up from two in the first 11.

Ferrari also committed heavily to attempting to win particular races. It resulted in unique aerodynamic design that was essentially limited to use on the long straightaway courses in Las Vegas and Italy. Leclerc may have won the Vegas race, but for crash that let the Red Bull drivers catch up, Verstappen and Pérez defeated Ferrari driver Sainz in Italy.

In 2023, errors made by the drivers for Mercedes and Ferrari cost their teams lot of points. While Hamilton and Sainz suffered major incidents in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, respectively, that ruined their chances of winning those races, Leclerc and Russell experienced string of mishaps. After the August midway break, Sainz, at least, enjoyed prosperous run that culminated in his victory in Singapore. Mercedes ultimately defeated Ferrari by three points to take second place in the constructors' championship, trailing only Red Bull. They were third and fourth behind Aston Martin in the first few races of the year.

By doing this, McLaren "unlocked second in lap time," according to Wolff. Ferrari principal Vasseur declared that the company would "improve on aero, on engine — on every single topic" in an effort to match Red Bull's 2024 speed and success. However, neither team is delusional about the difficulties they must overcome. "To catch up with Red Bull, there's mountain to climb," Wolff remarked. "We have to turn no stone unturned."
