What is the Best Climate for Growing Turmeric?

The crop thrives when the temperature stays between 24°C and 28°C. It requires 70-230 cm of rainfall during its growing season, which is why areas with a strong monsoon are most suitable. 

However, farmers in dry regions can also grow turmeric successfully if irrigation is available.

  • Ideal temperature: 24–28°C

  • Annual rainfall: 70-230 cm

Choosing the right climate is the first and most important step, because it directly impacts the yield and quality of the rhizomes.

How to Prepare Soil for Turmeric Farming?

Turmeric prefers fertile, well-drained soils that are rich in organic matter. The ideal soil conditions for turmeric are:

  • Loamy or alluvial soils

  • Can be grown in sandy loam and clay loam

  • pH between 4.5 and 7.5, which makes it slightly acidic to neutral.

Like every other crop, turmeric also needs significant land preparation before sowing. So, how should you start with the land preparation? 

  • Plough the land 3 to 4 times.

  • Add organic matter, such as farmyard manure (FYM) or compost

  • Proper drainage to prevent waterlogging

  • Pratibha Short-duration crop of about 225 days. Resistant to serious diseases like rhizome rot. 

Growing Turmeric with Rhizomes and Not Seeds

Turmeric is propagated using rhizomes instead of seeds. But you may wonder what exactly rhizomes are. Rhizomes are the underground stems that look like roots. It is exactly the part used as a spice, as a knot, or ground into a powder. 

Healthy, medium-sized rhizomes should be selected for planting. On average, 1000 kg of rhizomes per acre are required. Before planting, rhizomes should be treated with fungicides or natural solutions like Trichoderma to prevent fungal diseases like rhizome rot. 

Planting Process

Turmeric planting usually begins with the arrival of the monsoon in May or June. Farmers can plant on ridges, furrows, or raised beds depending on soil conditions. Spacing is important for good growth. 

The recommended planting in turmeric cultivation is:

  • Row Spacing: 30 cm between two rows

  • Plant Spacing: 20 cm between two plants

  • Soil Depth: Not more than 3 cm

Irrigation Management

Turmeric needs regular moisture, but it cannot tolerate waterlogging. If rainfall is good, irrigation is required less often. In drier areas, irrigation once every 7–10 days is necessary for healthy growth. Drip irrigation is highly effective, as it saves water and delivers moisture directly to the roots.

Farmers should carefully monitor soil moisture and provide irrigation as per the stage of crop growth.

Fertilizer Requirement

Farmers should apply 8–10 tonnes of farmyard manure (FYM) per acre at the time of land preparation. In addition, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potash fertilisers should be used at 10 kg per acre during the crop cycle. For organic farming, compost, neem cake, and vermicompost are excellent options.

Farmers should use pesticides and herbicides in effective doses to control pests and diseases in turmeric.
