Are you a parent who wants to create an environment where your kids will grow up with a sense of responsibility for the things that they do? If so, then it is time to get serious about saving money and investing in your future. The pandemic has taught us how essentially a good savings habit is to our financial security, but there are many ways to teach your kids how to save money too. Here are some tips to help them and take steps towards developing their own financial identity.
Take advantage of this opportunity to show them how easy it is to save money if you know that
If you want to help your child learn about money, why not use these free resources from the Federal Reserve? They will help you understand basic concepts and money management strategies. This page gives more than 150 links related to financial planning and education, including free downloadable PDFs from the Emergency Management Bank (EMB). These free resources give you everything from emergency funds to budgeting and saving basics on an individual basis.
Give them a list of all your favorite products or services
Nowadays, parents look at every supermarket shelf for snacks and sweets to buy. What if your child sees that he or she doesn't have enough milk or sugar for his/her birthday? So instead of thinking, I should add more sugar to sweeten my cup of coffees, I think about buying one pint of ice cream instead. Or try another option such as purchasing three cups of fruit juice instead of a drink for cake. There are countless possibilities here.
Get him involved in the local community
Children love to be part of something bigger than themselves. Get your kids involved in the community where they live and the types of businesses as such as cafeteria, restaurants, farmers markets and even churches as they like to hang out. Ask your child what kinds of business activities they enjoy. Is it cleaning of old cars? You bet it is! It's also great to connect to other parents in the area and see what types of jobs they are doing. This goes for school-age kids as well, as your kids will feel more comfortable when they become familiar with their peers and the types of businesses that surround them.
Be generous and ask for help
If your child is struggling with a problem, don't hesitate to ask for help. Talk about it and do all that is reasonable for them, such as asking for some food or some homework help instead. In fact, I encourage children to look at the situation and try to figure out how to solve the problem without getting frustrated. Don't let your child get discouraged if they do find help, and then give their full attention to everything they need. Let them take charge. When children are able to work with adults and follow instructions, they will grow up to become self-sufficient, responsible individuals.
Give them a weekly allowance instead
Do you know what works better for each family? A weekly allowance can provide them with a sense of accomplishment and help them feel more responsible for their choices. Some kids are already aware of this and others might need assistance. However, before making any decisions, you can always ask yourself the following questions: Do my kids have to earn their allowance every week? Do they get allowances only on weekends and only around lunchtime? Should their allowance be spent on food and clothes? Have they got enough money to go on trips and vacations? Allowing your child to decide and make their own choice is what makes for a happy life.
Make sure they never miss out on what matters:
In today's world, children want what they see first, so give them plenty of chances and opportunities to build a strong financial foundation in their early years of growing up. Spend moments to help your children become more responsible citizens by giving them the freedom to spend money on whatever they want. For example, allow them to start saving on Christmas gifts and even choose which ones they want. Set aside a certain amount of money monthly with the intention of using it as soon as possible whenever they feel like spending or saving.
