Learn how to germinate from us. All you need is some old jam you can buy at the supermarket and some seeds (lentils, peas, chickpeas, etc.).
Buds grow year-round and are ideal in the middle of winter when there is little to plant.
Why do they sprout?
Sprouts can be grown at any time of the year, even in the smallest home, on a minimal budget and is also rich in vitamins and nutrients, which is good for your health and fights pesky winter colds.
A wide variety of seeds can be easily grown into sprouts, including radishes, peas, chickpeas, mung beans, alfalfa, fenugreek, sunflower, lentils and broccoli. Each Of the seed have their own unique taste.
Add to sandwiches, salads, soups and fries or eat directly. It is fun for experimenting.
Fantastic value
No need to buy small and expensive bags of sprouted seeds. Many dried legumes, such as mung beans, lentils, or chickpeas that you can buy in supermarkets or health food stores, will sprout as well, but are very inexpensive. If you buy sprouted seeds online, look for larger (500g) bags as they are often much cheaper.
How to Make Your Own Sprouts
Sprouters are easy to buy and very easy to DIY. In my experience, DIY jam pots are actually easier to use and give better results than many commercial pots. Make sprouts in two simple steps.
1 Find a suitable sized glass bottle with a lid.
2 Drill a small hole in the lid - use a 3 mm fine or hammer and nail. If you wish, you can skip the lid altogether and simply drain the water with your fingers.
Now here's how to use it:
How to grow seedlings
1 Place a few seeds on the bottom of the bottle and cover with water to soak for 12 hours. It is fun to experiment as you can add only one type of seed or a mixture of several varieties. Seeds expand significantly as they grow. Jars are typically filled with 0.5-1 inch (1-2 cm) dried seeds. It depends on the seed that you use . Radishes, for example, grow more than sunflowers. This is simple to learn
2 After 12 hours, rinse the seeds with water. Ideally, the water should be at room temperature, not too cold or too hot. Then drain the water from the hole in the lid and keep the seeds moist but not floating.
3 Repeat the rinse cycle at least once every 12 hours (usually about 2-4 days) until the sprouts are ready.
4 Eat bean sprouts right away. Or put it in a plastic bag and put it in the refrigerator for a few days (the family happily ate it after at least a week).
How do you like them?
If you grow or buy bean sprouts, I'd love to hear how you eat them in the comments below. What breeds do you like best and how do you like to eat them?
Microgreens
If you like sprouting, why not try growing peas and other feeble vegetables? They are easy to grow, tasty and nutritious.
Healthy Warning
In general, sprouts are a very healthy food and can be added to the most balanced diet. However, like other foods (example:oysters, eggs) sprouts can sometimes withstand Echoli and Salmonella food poisoning (inside the seeds). The chances of purchasing infected seeds are very low. Even if it is small, you should be aware that there are risks, especially if you have poor health.
