The first purpose of sleep is restoration every day; our brain accumulates metabolic waste related to its normal neural activities. While this is entirely normal, too much accumulation of this waste product has been connected to neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.
So how does our brain get rid of metabolic waste?
Recently, research has suggested that sleep plays a crucial role in cleaning out the brain each night. While we walk, some toxins can be flushed out, but researchers have found that this type of clearance during sleep is as much as two times faster than during waking hours.
During sleep, brain cells drop down by 60%, allowing the brain's waste removal system, called the glymphatic system. This system takes out the trash more easily, and as this result, our brains are restored during sleep and wake up with a refreshed and clear mind.
Memory consolidation of sleep
Sleep is necessary for memory consolidation; this is the process of maintenance and gives strength to our long-term memories. Insufficient sleep can destroy our ability to form concrete memories and emotional memories, which means it affects our fact and figures memories.
