How Does Air Pollution Occur?
Hazardous elements from both man-made and natural sources are combined to form air pollution.
The main causes of man-made air pollution include vehicle emissions, fuel oils and natural gas used to heat homes, waste products from manufacturing and power generation, mainly from coal-fired power plants, and odors from chemical manufacturing.
Hazardous compounds are released into the atmosphere by nature, including gases like methane produced by the breakdown of organic matter in soils, ash and gases from volcanic eruptions, and smoke from wildfires, which are frequently started by humans.
Most of the components of man-made air pollution are present in traffic-related air pollution (TRAP), a mixture of gases and particles, including ground-level ozone, different types of carbon, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, volatile organic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, fine particles.
At ground level, the atmospheric gas ozone is frequently referred to as smog. It is produced when pollutants from factories, power plants, automobiles, industrial boilers, and other sources react chemically with sunlight.
Poisonous gases are byproducts of industrial operations and parts of motor vehicle emissions. They include carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur oxides.
Chemicals like sulfates, nitrates, carbon, or mineral dust make up particulate matter (PM), sometimes known as air pollution. Smoke from cigarettes, industrial emissions from burning fossil fuels, and burning organic debris, including that from wildfires, are all sources of PM.
Fine particulate matter (PM 2.5), a subtype of PM, is 30 times thinner than human hair. It can cause substantial lung damage when inhaled deeply into the lungs. In health issues In the US, PM 2.5 is primarily responsible for adverse health impacts from air pollution.
The term "volatile organic compounds" (VOC) refers to substances that vaporize at or near room temperature. Because they include carbon, they are referred to as organic. Paints, household cleaners, insecticides, some furniture, and even craft tools like glue all release volatile organic compounds (VOC). The main combustion-related sources of VOC are gasoline and natural gas.
Organic substances with carbon and hydrogen are known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). The Report on Carcinogens lists 15 of the more than 100 paths that are known to be prevalent in the environment. In addition to combustion, several industrial processes—including the production of iron, steel, and rubber products, as well as the creation of electricity—also result in the by-product paths.

What Does the NIELS Do?
NIELS has been a pioneer in the study of air pollution for more than 50 years. Research into how air pollution impacts health and the demographic groups that are most affected is still funded and carried out by the institute.
What impact does pollution have on our health?
1970 saw the creation of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards.
The primary threat posed by air pollution to respiratory health was considered. The seminal Six Cities Study, which demonstrated a link between fine particulate matter and mortality, was published in 1993 by NIELS researchers.
Exposure to air pollution is linked to oxidative stress and inflammation in human cells, which may serve as a precursor to chronic illnesses and cancer. The World Health Organization's (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer designated air pollution as a human carcinogen in 2013.
The study of how air pollution affects health is always evolving. Cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory illnesses, diabetes, obesity, and abnormalities of the reproductive, nervous, and immune systems are currently among public health concerns.
Cancer
A significant study including more than 57,000 women discovered that living close to busy roads may raise a woman's chance of breast cancer.
Other airborne hazardous chemicals, including methylene chloride, which is used in aerosol goods and paint removers, were discovered by the NIELS Sister Study to be linked to a higher risk of breast cancer.
Workplace exposure to the industrial chemical benzene, which is also a component of gasoline, has been linked to non-lymphoma Hodgkin's and leukemia.

NIELS researchers have linked the increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke to post-menopausal women's short-term daily exposure to nitrogen oxides.
Some older Americans may experience decreased levels of high-density lipoprotein, also known as good cholesterol, as a result of exposure to TRAP.
A National Toxicology Program (NTP) research claims that TRAP exposure also raises a pregnant woman's risk for hypertensive disorders, which are a major contributor to preterm birth, low birth weight, and illnesses and deaths in both the mother and the fetus.
Breathing disorders
Emphysema, asthma, and other respiratory conditions including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are all linked to air pollution, which can influence the development of the lungs (COPD).
Urbanization and outdoor air pollution are connected to increases in asthma prevalence and severity. Children with asthma are more common in low-income urban regions than in other locations. Ozone and PM2.5, two air pollutants, were linked to changes in children's airways associated with asthma, according to research published in 2023.
Nitrogen oxide and PM have been associated with chronic bronchitis, and have been linked to PM and nitrogen oxide.
A significant public health issue in 2020 was the co-occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic and wildfires throughout the western United States. A study revealed a correlation between wildfire smoke and more COVID-19 cases and deaths, building on the already well-known association between air pollution and respiratory-tract illnesses.
