Supplement Basics For Women

It’s important for women to take supplements and vitamins with their daily diets. It’s well-known that the absolute best way for women to get all the vitamins and nutrients they need on a daily basis is to eat a variety of foods, usually set forth by the government. In the United States, the Food Guide Pyramid is released by the USDA, the United States Department of Agriculture, which outlines meat, vegetables, fruit, and dairy that are needed to have a daily balance. By having a well-balanced diet, women are able to get all the minerals and vitamins she needs daily.

Of course, this is fine in a perfect world. But we don’t live in a perfect world – as such, most women don’t have the time, patience, or ability to eat a diet with all the necessary nutrients. Things like busy lifestyles, bad habits, and the convenience of pre-packaged food or food that comes quickly (such as fast food grabbed on the run) get in the way of eating healthy. Because of this, supplements are available to fill in the void and give women all the nutrients that they lack.

 Multi-Vitamins,

Multi-vitamins are sufficient supplements for those women that are fairly healthy and attempt to eat a variety of foods every day. It’s important to take a look at the label of the supplement to discover how much of the RDA, or recommended dietary allowance, the supplement contains for each particular nutrient or vitamin. This is because there are recommended dietary allowances, for vitamins like A, D, E, K, calcium, iodine, iron, protein, etc. Labels should indicate the RDA for each supplement and what percentage they contain.

Taking too much of a certain nutrient may come with certain side effects, so be particularly sure to be aware of the RDA for your particular nutrient.

 Special Supplements

Aside from the multivitamin, a lot of women may decide to take additional supplements to fill in for what vitamins and nutrients they’re lacking. A common supplement that focuses on only one nutrient is calcium supplements.  These are chosen more often than others because of their ability to build strong bones and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. In addition, vitamin D is taken to help build strong bones as well. Another supplement that many women take includes folic acid. Folic acid can possibly help prevent birth defects and help lower the risk of breast and colon cancers.

Some women also choose to not take any multivitamins whatsoever and create a daily vitamin routine that is customized to their particular needs. Women that take daily supplements try to eat healthily and have a balanced diet can almost guarantee they’ll receive all the nutrients they require.
