How do babies get gas?
When babies digest milk or formula milk proteins or fats, they get flatulence. The gas escapes through the digestive tract, creating pressure in the baby's body. However, when more gas is produced in the intestines, more pressure builds up and causes pain.
Some of the causes of flatulence in a baby's digestive tract are as follows:
1. Swallowing air:-
The baby swallows air while breastfeeding or formula milk, and it is the main cause of flatulence in babies. If the baby's grip on the nipple is wrong or if the baby is pulling the bottle of formula milk incorrectly, the baby may swallow air and cause gas to the baby.
2. Crying:-
If the baby cries while weaning or before weaning, the baby may swallow air. Sometimes, if the baby is crying too much, it is a sign of flatulence. If the baby is crying like that, the reason for the baby's crying is not known. But soon, you will begin to understand the different ways a baby cries.
Now, you will begin to understand the baby's needs, and it will help to calm the baby. However, if the baby does not stop crying, you should take the baby to the doctor.
3. Immature digestive system:-
The digestive system of a newborn baby is still developing. Therefore, due to the underdeveloped digestive system, the baby is still learning how to digest food. And that process produces more gas.
4. Undeveloped bacteria:-
Good bacteria are not yet developed in the gut, so the baby is more likely to have flatulence.
5. Eating certain foods while breastfeeding:-
Breastfeeding contains certain portions of the food that the mother eats. If you eat nuts, coffee, beans, dairy products such as cheese, butter, and ghee, they can reach your baby and cause gas.
6. If the baby is given too much milk:-
If your baby is given too much milk, the baby may get flatulence. The first condensed milk and the latter condensed milk are high in sugar and high in fat. Excessive amounts of lactose cause flatulence and make the baby unwell.
7. Other factors:-
Hormones, constipation, and carbohydrates cause flatulence.
What can you do to help your baby avoid gas?
'Prevention is better than cure. If your baby is suffering from flatulence, you should be careful while breastfeeding or bottle-feeding. While breastfeeding, you should avoid certain foods, such as dried fish, spicy meats, nuts, pulses, dairy products, and vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower.
If you have started giving solids to the baby, avoid giving foods that will cause the baby to gas. Make sure your baby is sleeping on his stomach for a while every day. Lay the baby on his stomach for a few minutes. Light pressure on the abdomen will help the air to escape.
During the day, when you take the baby, pat it on the back, and play with the baby. This will help to get the gas out of the baby's body. It will also strengthen the back and neck muscles.
When should you contact a doctor?
If your baby is crying for a long time and is experiencing some changes in the baby's behavior, fever, vomiting, and the baby is not eating, it is best to consult a doctor.
If your baby can't tell you that the wind is causing pain, you need to note the symptoms. If gas accumulates and is not properly cared for, the baby becomes very uncomfortable and in pain. So you take good care of the baby.
