How To Prepare a Trial Balance

How is a trial balance prepared?
An accounting program on a computer or manual preparation of trial balances are also possible. Follow these procedures when creating a trial balance for any kind of business:

1. Maintain the balance of every ledger account
Before making the entries in the appropriate ledger accounts, businesses first record their transactions as journal entries. The closing balances of each ledger account for the accounting period are then determined. Rent, wages, utilities, loans, and inventories are examples of common ledger accounts. The trial balance sheet contains the ledger accounts' closing balances. Before creating a trial balance, find out the closing balances of every account on your ledger to make sure there are no mistakes. The difference between an account's total credits and debits is its balance.

2. Create the worksheet for trial balance
The trial balance worksheet needs to be prepared in the following step by making three distinct columns. The names of each ledger account are listed in one column, and the debit and credit balances for each account are listed in the remaining two columns. It is optional to include account numbers and other information.

3. Complete the worksheet
Enter the names of all the accounts and the total debits or credits for each ledger account for the accounting period. Verify that the amounts are entered in the correct column. Enter the transactions that are crediting and debiting the designated columns.

4. Total the numbers in every column
Once each column has been completed, you may find the total number of columns by adding up the values in each column. There should be an identical amount in each of the credit and debit columns if your company's ledgers are accurate. At this point, you can determine whether any of the entries are incorrect.

5. End the trial balance
If the credit and debit columns in your trial balance worksheet are equal, you can close it. If they differ from one another, you must locate the mistake in your ledger. Finding and fixing the frequent mistakes that lead to unbalanced credit and debit columns can be made simpler if you are aware of them. The account cannot be closed until all mistakes have been fixed.
