Many films have been made about the tragic story of the Titanic. Arrogance and ignorance were really present during its first voyage, which was the last voyage of the Titanic.
Many warnings were given, but unfortunately, these warnings were not taken seriously. On April 14, 1912, the Titanic received six warnings of an iceberg. On the night of April 14, the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank in the Atlantic Ocean.
For some organizations, what happened on the Titanic MUST NOT happen to them. Many have learned from the mistakes of the Titanic.
There are a few consecutive examples, and they form a similarity to what happened on the Titanic and how the company can learn from the mistakes of the Titanic.
1. The Titanic had only 16 lifeboats, which could not fit anyone aboard the ship.
Only about 60 percent of all rescue boats were used! Does your company have a disaster plan? Are your computers, especially your servers, backed up regularly? Many servers are now backed up daily and sometimes hourly.
While I was working at the help desk, one of our afternoon friends was nicknamed the "Queen of the Archive Copy" because she was taking EVERY copy of the repository. The company was very lucky to have a "Backup Queen" because there were a few instances where our most important server crashed and lost information. Fortunately, the data recovery was quick and painless because the machine was backed up regularly.
We were very lucky to have someone take the initiative to manage the backup of the server. Is your company so lucky? Yes, backing up may not be so enjoyable. However, losing important data can be very exciting, but in a bad way.
2. Workers in a watch tower, or “crow's nest,” were not given a telescope to search for snowy mountains.
Employees were not given the right tools to use to do their job. Does your company use the right software at work? Are you saving money on upgrading your app and software, but losing customers? If you lose customers, you DON'T really SAVE any money.
Appropriate equipment can range from basic, such as removing headphone-enabled headphones to customer service representatives, to ensure that the backup generator can work adequately due to power outages.
3. The Titanic had a total of 16 waterproof compartments. At first, it sounded good, but unfortunately, each room had no water of its own. Each room was like an ice cube tray. When one chamber overflowed, water gushed out. Each room did not completely shut off the water itself.
Does your company have a good disaster recovery plan? If a flood or a fire hit the area, would you be able to run the business again in a few days or just a few months?
Is your personal information on the site exported so that you can have more access to your important information?
4. The Titanic was speeding through the night on frozen waters.
Are your equipment in your business operating at 100% continuous capacity? How much does it cost to take a break if those machines need to be repaired? REALLY saving money by not buying more equipment? Does the cost of additional equipment exceed the operating costs of your current equipment?
5. The Titanic did not heed many warnings of ice.
The Titanic received six warnings on the day it sank! Does your sales team, customer service department and / or help desk REALLY listen to your customers? Sam Walton, founder of Walmart, said the most important person in the organization could be the one who greets those customers. Too many companies don't even realize how much each person represents their company!
THERE IS A LOT OF COMPETITION ON THE GROUND NOT listening to warnings. Industries such as telecom, automobiles, office supplies, soft drinks, and restaurant industries, to name a few, had better take precautions. Some companies may not get the luxury of the six warnings received by the Titanic. Sometimes, only one warning can break a company. That’s why companies DO promote, and take seriously, customer feedback is very important and can be a gold mine.
6. The Titanic had only white guns to show help.
The color red is the typical color of an explosive device used to indicate help. As the Titanic sank, white rifles were fired into the ship. One or two ships several miles away say white flares, but they did not interpret white flares as warning messages.
Does your business use appropriate communication channels? Is it safe to say that all parties involved fully understand what the other parties are saying? Many groups in the organization speak completely different languages. Sales translation, technology and management may be similar to translating three different foreign languages.
7. Bruce Is may, president of the White Star, pressured Captain Smith to reach false and dangerous goals.
It may be wanted the Titanic to arrive in New York on April 16 Saturday. To reach that goal, the ship would have to sail on a high speed most of the time. Is may, coercion has been a disaster due to the death of the ship.
Is may’s level was similar to that of the CEO. Does the CEO of your company and other executives set realistic goals? Do your managers provide bilateral communication? Feedback is critical to the survival of any company because many managers do not engage in day-to-day operations.
8. The main features of wireless pilots were not focused on the essentials of the ship.
Most of the dignitaries in the first phase had paid both operators bonuses to send messages by phone to New York. One of the Titanic's pilots told another ship to "shut down" after being given another ice warning.
