Football is a family of team sports where goal-scoring is achieved through kicking a ball to differing degrees. Without qualification, the term "football" often refers to the most widely played variation of the game in the context in which it is used. The different football codes can be divided into two main classes based on commonalities between them: carrying codes, which include American football, Canadian football, Australian football, rugby union, and rugby league, and kicking codes, which include association football and Gaelic football, where the ball is moved primarily with the feet and handling is strictly prohibited.Rome and Greece in antiquity
It is well known that the ancient Greeks and Romans engaged in a variety of ball sports, some of which required foot play. Greek team game "ἐπίσκυρος" (Episkyros) is thought to have been the source of the Roman game harpastum[20].The Greek poet Antiphanes (388–311 BC) mentions [21] or "φαιvίνδα" (phaininda),[22] which is later referred to by the Christian theologian Clement of Alexandria (c. 150–c. 215 AD). These seem to have been similar to rugby football.[23][24][25][26][27] The story of a guy who was slain while getting a shave when a ball was kicked into a barbershop is told by the Roman statesman Cicero (106–43 BC). The air-filled ball, or follis, was previously familiar from Roman ball games.[28][29] It is said that Episkyros was an early form.
