How to pick the right sunscreen

The cold spell is finally upon us, and with it comes the comfort of cosy knits and warm soup. After a long wait to bid farewell to the scorching heat, the sheer happiness of strolling in the winter sun can no longer elude us. But this happy thought aside, the season does cough up various skin concerns: dry skin and hair, chapped lips, acne, and brittle hair shafts to name a few.

To err on the side of caution, one might think of switching their regular skincare routine to a winter-friendly one. But, before you expect to burn a hole in your pocket to stock up on certain skincare products, experts suggest taking a holistic approach to understand your skin.

Simple things like using a gentle hydrating cleanser, avoiding alcohol-based toners, and applying products with water-retaining capacity are just a few dos. In fact, if in the mood for a little ayurvedic ritual, one can also try facial massages. An oil massage is considered an important winter ritual as per Ayurveda. Other options for massage:
  • Almond oil
  • Plain ghee or butter (unsalted)
  • Coconut oil + turmeric powder
  • One can also apply milk cream (malai) with a pinch of turmeric powder followed by a gentle massage                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        The nip in the air is our cue to bring out the knits and neck warmers, draw the curtains on the cold winds and protect our skin from weather-related dryness and moisture loss. Here are some tips to keep dry skin at bay this winter.
