How to move on after a Breakup

We all have had our share of sleepless nights, crying sessions, ranting-about-our-ex-to-our-best friend sessions, eating from a tub of ice cream, and the list goes on. Each time we get heartbroken, we promise to ourselves that we’ll find someone far better the subsequent time. Moving on can be very difficult sometimes. We try to find our ex in our next, or we attempt to find someone very different from our ex. We try to overload ourselves with work so that we don't think about it. We run away from our feelings till we stop feeling anything. But what we do forget is that the only way out is through. At present, you might feel like it is a long tunnel with just darkness in it, but as you live to see a new day every day, you’ll realize that there indeed is light at the end, no matter how faint it looks right now.

Here’s what we can do instead to cope healthily with the breakup.

  1. Observe what you are feeling- while staying busy and not thinking about it might help some people to move on, it is always advisable not to run away from our feelings and observe them instead. Cry if you wish to, speak about your ex to your friends, but don’t defame them.
  2. Work on improving yourself- if you can’t find anything bad about them, then maybe it’s time to look at the mirror. Ask your friends what their pet peeves are about you or any other toxic habits. Work on yourself if you think it is something you won’t be okay with if you’d have to deal with it.
  3. Socialize- Make new friends, reconnect with your old friends. Having a rant session with your friends can be beneficial at times.
  4. Give more time to your hobbies- Now that you’re single, spend a longer time with yourself. Read those books which you have been procrastinating to read for ages. Learn to cook a brand new dish or even a full new cuisine. Travel to new places. Watch movies, and please refrain from watching any romantic movies for now.

  1. Exercising- working out can help improve your mood. So grab those running shoes and go for a jog. Go for cycling, swimming or anything that you like. Remember to push yourself each day with a slightly higher target than yesterday.
  2. Stop stalking them- make a note of this literally. Write it on a sticky note and paste it on every wall of your house. You don’t have to know how happy or sad they are without you.
  3. Don’t set a deadline for yourself- don’t listen to your friends when they say you are taking too long to get over them. Everyone is unique, and every relationship is unique. Cherish what you both had and take your time to move on. Don’t be harsh on yourself if your friend moved on in a week and you are still crying over your ex after a month. It's okay to mourn for a little longer; You are not alone in this.
