I remember when I met my stepdaughter named Tallinn. She was 5 years old and had a pretty personality. But she spent so much time with Childminder that I felt a little sorry for her. The childminder took her and picked her up from her school. One day, Her mother couldn't pick her up until around 8 pm.
After dating her mom for a few months, I offered to help her by saying that I could take Tallinn to school and pick her up. Tallinn asked me to do it, and it was all agreed. Tallinn had never been actually encouraged to do his homework by either a very busy and often tired mother, or a childminder.
When I returned home from her school on her first day to pick her up, I asked Tallinn if she had her homework. She handed me a reading folder. In that folder was the book she was supposed to read. Now let Tallinn read this book with me, I said. I don't do my homework, Tallinn replied. I told her it was her past and she would do it from now on.
Tallinn's ground a little and started crying. "You are not my father, you can't make me," she continued. I was basically very strong and had to get her to read her book. There were so many of her words she couldn't read, so I wrote them down on the list. Then we spent about 10 minutes with me trying to teach her words. She found it all very boring. Then I told her we were going to play a game, a mouth play. She selected her word from the list and spelled it quietly. If you can guess what she said, she will get points, and then it's my turn.
Tallinn really enjoyed the game and on his way home from school the next day asked if he could play the game again. Of course, you can, but I said you have to read the book first. Tallinn replied that it was okay. This is an example of many games we play when doing homework and other tasks that kids consider mediocre. I also praise both children and regularly tell them how much I love and be proud of them. When they receive a good school report, I reward them and encourage them to always give something, even if they think they may fail in a particular job. In my opinion, there is no failure when you do your best.
