The dark gray lunar volcanic rock that makes up the majority of lunar dust has been found by researchers to have the potential to be utilized as a building material for lunar landing pads and highways. According to Space dot com, the discovery is based on trials carried out on Earth in which artificial lunar soil was exposed to intense sunlight through big lenses.

In a recent study, researchers tested whether focused sunlight could melt lunar dust into solid rock slabs using a fine-grained substance called EAC-1A, created by the European Space Agency.
Although earlier studies had suggested that strong laser beams or intense sunshine may fuse lunar soil into robust structures, neither the size of the light beams used in the trials nor the production of blocks this size had been tested. Ginés-Palomares estimated that a lens with a diameter of about 5.7 feet (1.74 meters) would be needed too
This method of producing lunar tiles by concentrating sunlight has promise for future lunar building. In order to decide whether or not these tiles are suitable for landing pads, further trials will evaluate how resistant they are to rocket thrust. In addition, experiments with lower gravity and an atmosphere to mimic lunar conditions are planned by the researchers.
