How to Make Money on UpWork

What is Upwork?

Upwork is a marketplace for freelancers in areas such as writing, image design and web development. The site helps professionals find projects, communicate with clients and get paid.

If you are a new self-employed person, or working in a new field, you can gather important information without constantly throwing cold clients at clients. But the site is full of new employees who are willing to take the job at a lower cost, which could affect your income.

All in all, Upwork makes it easy to get jobs and make extra money, but think carefully about what gigs you want to wear. Also, check out our guide to managing your finances as a freelancer for advice on how to manage your new salary, once it starts coming in.

How to Make Money on Upwork

1. Set a solid profile - and trustworthy

Your profile serves the same purpose as a regular CV for prospective employers. You can't get a job without someone else.

Fill in the type of work you would like to do, specific areas of expertise and your level of expertise. All of this is reporting to you, so stay honest. If you are notified of services that you can provide, your account may be suspended or closed.

Then, add a headshot and a detailed description of your domain. You can include links to portfolio or specific work samples.

You can also complete your education, how many hours per week you can work, the location and the amount you like. If you are unsure of what to pay, check the prices of other Upwork freelancers with similar experience.

Upwork will usually approve your profile within 24 hours, assuming your profile is valid and accurate. After that you can start working.

2. Select an membership plan

Upwork offers two membership programs for freelancers: Basic and Extra.

Basic

This program is free, but you will pay to connect with potential clients. Freelancers in the basic program pay $ 0.15 each for "Connect," the internal tokens of the platform, which are used to deliver suggestions to customers. You can wrap up to 140 Connects every month.

When someone reaches you, you do not need to use any connectors. When your profile looks solid, you are more likely to get jobs from potential customers. Demonstrating your outstanding work or highlighting certain accomplishments can help you stand out. If you are new to your field, a sense of volunteering is important, too.

The basic plan includes the payment of hourly and project-based payments protection.

in addition

This plan is $ 14.99 per month and includes everything in the basic plan, including:

70 Connects monthly.

Appearance of what prices the competitors have bid for the job.

Revenue saving option is private.

Ability to customize the profile of your profile.

The profile has never been hidden due to inactivity.

3. Contact (employers).

Use your Connects to submit job suggestions to your wheelhouse. Suggestions should include a presentation letter, desired fees and answers to questions put by the client on submission. You can also post examples of any work you think is appropriate.

Before applying for a gig, get an idea of a potential employer name. Better Business Bureau, Glassdoor and employer news search on Google are great places to start your research.

4. Set your value and start working

Improvement takes part of your income. The cost structure is a smooth scale based on the total amount you pay with the client over time, so the more you work with the client, the less cutting is done. You can expect Upwork to take:

20% off the first $ 500 you charge a client.

10% of the total payment by the client between $ 500.01 and $ 10,000.

5% of the total payment by a client exceeding $ 10,000.

You can be paid in one of two ways: hourly or fixed price. Upwork payments are the same for both.

Your hourly rate on Upwork is a pre-service deduction. So if you write $ 20 per hour for your first gig, you can expect to earn $ 16 per hour after a 20% payout. Once you have charged $ 500 for that client, the fee is reduced to 10% and you will earn $ 18 per hour.

When negotiating a fixed price, the same principle applies: If you earn $ 400 per job, you will be paid $ 320 after a 20% cut. Once you have charged $ 500 per client, the fee is reduced to 10%.

Stable pricing projects

Payment for fixed price projects is more straightforward. The person or company that owes the contract must set aside a certain amount of money when making a contract. The employer must also set a record, which is the material that must be delivered on the way to the completed work. You get paid with a certain deposit or all of it once you reach these checkpoints, and the rest is paid when everything is completed.

5. Receive payment

Upwork Independents can receive secure payments via PayPal, direct deposit or wireless transfer.

All your hourly projects are billed weekly. You will be paid after you and the client have reviewed the work, within 10 days after the end of the payment period. If the project is unloaded before it is completed, then Hour Protection and Important Steps become useful. If you think you have not been properly compensated, Upwork has a dispute process.

Fixed price projects start paying off as you reach the agreed milestone. You can start an argument if the client fails to pay the record or refuses to pay what you think the job is done for.
