If you’ve ever considered making your own cake, now’s the time to start! It’s easier than you think, and the feeling of accomplishment after you bake your first delicious homemade cake will be priceless.
Gather your ingredients
To make a chocolate cake at home, you will need: 2 cups of sugar, 3 eggs, 1 1⁄2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder, 1⁄2 teaspoon baking soda and 1⁄4 teaspoon salt. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs and cocoa powder until light and fluffy. Whisk in the flour, baking soda and salt until just combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. Pour batter into prepared pan; it should be about 3⁄4 full. Bake for 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean when tested against bottom of pan.
Preheat your oven
If you want to make a cake, preheat your oven. Place the baking pan in the center of your oven. Turn the oven on and set it to 350 degrees Fahrenheit or 176 degrees Celsius. Allow the oven to heat up for at least 15 minutes before putting in your cake batter.
Mix your dry ingredients
In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder and baking soda. Add in the salt and mix well. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and melted butter or oil. Pour the wet mixture over dry ingredients and mix until just combined. You want to avoid over-mixing your batter as it will make your cake dense!
Mix your wet ingredients
In a bowl, mix together the eggs, sugar, and vanilla extract. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour and cocoa powder. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Pour into a greased 9-inch round baking pan or 9x13-inch baking pan. Bake for 40-50 minutes or until cooked through (a toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean). Allow to cool before frosting with your desired frosting of choice.
Combine wet and dry ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the dry ingredients: 3 cups all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1 cup cocoa powder. In another large bowl or in the bowl of your stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the wet ingredients: 1 cup vegetable oil, 2 cups sugar, 4 eggs and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until combined. Pour into two greased 9-inch cake pans. Bake for 25 minutes in a 350-degree oven or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Bake your cake
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl.
3. Add eggs, oil and water and whisk until combined. 2. Grease cake pan with butter or cooking spray (or rub with oil). Pour batter into the cake pan and bake for about 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let your cake cool
Once you take your cake out of the oven, it will take about 15-20 minutes for it to cool down enough that you can touch it without burning yourself. Let your cake cool before slicing into it. The best way is to use a wire rack so the air can circulate around all sides of the cake and bake evenly. If you decide not to use a wire rack, make sure you turn your cake halfway through the cooling process so that one side doesn't get more cooked than the other.
