What is a healthy weight?

A great question that is easy to answer by looking at your BMI. This is the body mass index, and you can see the calculator here Opens in a new tab,  a healthy BMI is 18-25, overweight is 25-30, over 30 is obesity. Under 18 is underweight.

There are obvious things you could consider, such as not eating after dinner, being careful with your intake of processed sugars, and eating more fruits and vegetables. However, there are some other eating strategies that can help you learn how to actually lose weight. For example, start by serving smaller portions. Believe it or not, eating while standing tends to make people gain weight simply because they are usually in a hurry, so they eat faster and don't pay as much attention to what and how much they eat.

Sit down and put down your fork

It has been proven that if you eat more slowly, your stomach-brain detects fullness sooner than if you eat quickly. If you eat very quickly, you can throw down a lot of food before you feel full. Whereas, if you eat more slowly, you tend to feel full of less food. To help with this strategy, it's pretty simple. Take a bite with the fork, put it down, chew the food and swallow it, pick up the fork and start the whole process over. This alone will slow you down a lot and prevent you from eating more than your stomach needs to feel full. Also, drinking a full glass of water before a meal takes up some space in your stomach, leaving you with less room for food.

Increase Burn

Increasing your activity will help you burn more calories. Even if it's as simple as a 20-minute walk, increasing your calorie burn above your baseline helps. Helps reduce caloric intake. This brings us back to our first bottom row above.

Spirit over matter

There are also mental strategies, such as when considering something to eat, ask yourself if it will help you lose weight or not. Additionally, some like to do what is called intermittent fasting, which basically means not eating food for a certain number of hours a day. For example, eating only during an 8-hour or 4-hour window and fasting the rest of the time except for water. It will leave you feeling hungry at first, but eventually it will wear off and once you reach 27 days, it will become your new habit. You can eat whatever you like during your eating window, but again, some discipline can help.

Setting goals

Everyone does better when they have a shot on target. Make them attainable and not too far out of reach, nor too grandiose or too big to discourage. You can use a target BMI as a goal. Or, for example, you might aim to lose 10% of your body weight, or maybe 10 pounds. Once you've achieved that, you can set another goal based on how much you'd like or need to lose for good health.

Don't do it alone

If you can do this with a partner, it will be much easier, and you can encourage each other on your journey. What is stopping you from taking the first step on the road to a healthier you?
