CBDT Extends Deadline to Link PAN with Aadhaar to June 30, 2023

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced that the deadline for linking Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar has been extended to June 30, 2023. This move has come as a relief to PAN cardholders who have not yet completed the linking process. As per the CBDT, over 51 crore PAN have already been linked with Aadhaar, and the extension provides more time to taxpayers to complete the linking process without facing any repercussions.

The Income-tax Act, 1961, mandates individuals who have been allotted a PAN on or before July 1, 2017, and are eligible to obtain an Aadhaar number, to link both documents. Earlier, the deadline for linking was March 31, 2023, and individuals who failed to do so would have faced consequences under the Act from April 1, 2023. However, with the recent extension, individuals now have until June 30, 2023, to link their PAN with Aadhaar without any adverse implications.

From July 1, 2023, onwards, individuals who have failed to link their PAN with Aadhaar will face severe consequences such as no refunds being made against such PAN, no interest being payable on such refunds for the period during which the PAN remains inoperative, and TDS and TCS being deducted or collected at a higher rate. However, individuals who fall under the exempted category, such as non-residents, individuals who are not citizens of India, and those aged 80 years or more during the previous year, are not required to link their PAN with Aadhaar and will not face the consequences mentioned above.

The decision to extend the deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar is an attempt to provide relief to taxpayers who found it challenging to meet the previous deadline. Many PAN cardholders were unable to complete the linking process due to various reasons such as the unavailability of Aadhaar centers, technical issues, and the ongoing pandemic situation.
