How healthy Kidneys work?
Kidneys remove wastes and extra fluids from the body in the form of urine. Kidneys also remove acid that is produced by the cells of your body and maintain a healthy balance of water, salts, and minerals such as sodium, calcium, phosphorus, and potassium in blood.
What Infected kidneys do ?
Kidney infection most often result from an infection in the urinary tract that spreads to one or both kidneys. Kidney infections can be sudden or chronic. They’re often painful and can be life-threatening if not treated properly and in results in kidneys failure.
There are two major types of kidney disease :
1: Nephrotic Syndrome
2: Nephritic Syndrome
Firstly we will discuss Nephrotic Syndrome its symptoms, types and causes.
Nephrotic syndrome:
Nephrotic Syndrome is a kidney disorder that causes the body to pass protein in urine. Nephrotic syndrome is caused by the damage to the clusters of blood vessels in kidneys that filter waste and water from blood. Symptoms:
Nephrotic Syndrome causes swelling to eyes or to feet and ankles, abdominal swelling.
Causes of Nephrotic syndrome:
Nephrotic syndrome is usually caused by damage to the clusters (glomeruli) of blood vessels of kidneys. The glomeruli main function is to filter blood as it passes through the kidneys, separating different things from blood that the body doesn’t need. Healthy glomeruli keep blood protein (albumin) which is an important component to maintain the right amount of fluid in the body from flowing into urine. When glomeruli are damaged, they allow too much blood protein to leave the body that causes serious problems.
There are many diseases and conditions that can cause glomerular damage, including:
Diabetes:
Diabetes or diabetic kidneys means high amount of sugar in blood can do severe kidney damage that affects the glomeruli.
Minimal change disease:
The most common cause of nephrotic syndrome in children. Minimal change disease results in an abnormal kidney function, when the kidney tissues are examined under a microscopic test called BIOPSY, it appears normal or sometimes nearly normal. The cause of the abnormal function typically can't be determined.
Focal segmental Glomeruli (FSGS):
This condition can result from another disease, a genetic defect or genetic disorder, infection, or other health reasons mainly related to heart or high blood pressure or certain medications or can be occurred for unknown reason.
Amyloid :
This disorder occurs when amyloid proteins accumulate in organs. Excess Amyloid often damages the kidneys' filtration system.
Systemic Lupus :
This chronic inflammatory disease can lead to serious kidney damage.
Membranous Nephropathy:
This kidney disorder is basically in the result of thickening membranes within the glomeruli or glomerular. The thickening is due to super active immune system. It can also be associated with other medical conditions, lupus, hepatitis B, malaria and cancer, or it can occur for an unknown reason.
Risk factors:
Factors that can increase your risk of nephrotic syndrome include. Certain diseases and conditions increase your risk of developing nephrotic syndrome, such as diabetes, lupus, reflux nephropathy and other kidney diseases. Medications that might cause nephrotic syndrome include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and drugs used to fight infections. Infections that increase the risk of nephrotic syndrome include HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and malaria.
Complications:
Blood clots, high cholesterol levels, poor diet, acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, infections, edema, swelling, pain, joint pain.
Nephritic Syndrome :
Nephritic syndrome is basically of different signs and symptoms that occur as a result of inflammations in the kidneys. This inflammation causes the kidneys to work less effectively. It also causes protein and red blood cells to leak from the bloodstream into the urine. Mostly a foamy urine is noted. There are many conditions that may cause nephritic syndrome, and it can occur in people of all ages. Common causes are infections, immune system disorders and inflammation of the blood vessels. The main symptoms are passing less urine than normal, leading to a fluid buildup in the body, and having blood in the urine. People with nephritic syndrome also often develop high blood pressure. Nephritic Syndrome can be developed by some of the following, Primary Glomerular disease such as IGA nephropathy and is a common cause of nephritic syndrome. Bacterial Infections such as pneumonia, typhoid, infective endocarditis, throat infection, fairly common in children's. Multisystem systemic inflammatory disease such as lupus, vasculitis. Abdominal abscess as infected fluid and pus inside Abdominal cavity, this can be near on any organ. Parasitic infections such as malaria.
SYMPTOMS:
Symptoms include passing less urine than normal, having blood in the urine and swelling of the feet or face (edema) mostly nearby eyes. Other possible symptoms are flank pain, back pain, headache, shortness of breath and skin rash and joint pain. The symptoms of nephritic syndrome differ, depending on whether the acute or chronic form of the syndrome, fever, weakness and fatigue, appetite loss, vomiting, abdominal pain, nausea, hypertension, high blood pressure, kidney failure on later stages, In both chronic and acute nephritic syndrome urine will usually contain high amount of blood cells leaking due to damaged glomeruli.
Diet for both nephrotic syndrome and nephritic syndrome:
A healthy diet for Nephrotic and nephritic Syndrome patients consists of low salt, low fat, and low cholesterol, with an emphasis on fruits and vegetables. The amount of protein and fluid a patient with Nephrotic Syndrome should have depends on the patient's current condition, age, and weight.
