How to Improving Low Self-Esteem

What is self-esteem?

Self-esteem is referred to aspects of the way we view ourselves, the thoughts we have about ourselves. For example, how much value or worth we give to ourselves? What is our perception of our own self? Low or poor self-esteem can negatively impact our thoughts, behaviors, emotions, and interpersonal relationships. You can improve your self-esteem by following few simple steps.

1. Recognize and Challenge Your Negative Opinion about Yourself :

You can modify your negative beliefs about yourself by following few simple and easy steps. The first thing you need to do is track or identify your negative or irrational thoughts about yourself. For instance, you may think too negatively about yourself, such as “I’m not good enough or I m not beautiful” whenever these types of negative thoughts take over you, look for why you are getting this feeling about yourself. Once you find the trigger, try to evaluate the situation objectively and remind yourself that your beliefs about yourself are not real, true, and actual.

2. See Yourself in Positive light Write down positive and good things about yourself. For example, recall those things and events where you perform well or nice positive comments that friends, family, or colleagues said about you. In short positive inner/ self-discussion can play a crucial role in improving your self-esteem.

3. Surround yourself with Positive Relationships: There are always few people who encourage you and see good in you. They make you feel good about yourself. Therefore, strengthening your relations with positive people and avoid negative or toxic relations that drag you down.

4. Don’t too hard to Yourself: Remember nobody is perfect and for you also not mandatory to be perfect in everything. Human feelings or emotions are dynamic, and they change from situation to situation or moment by moment. So, you don’t even need to feel happy and elevated throughout the day. So, don’t be too hard on yourself; give yourself a break and be kind to yourself.

5. Be Assertive and Learn to Say No :

To say no to others is often hard for the individual with low -esteem. They do not like to refuse other's requests or demands at home or the workplace. This means that they may become overburdened. This can cause them stress and make harder for them to manage situation or emotions. Working on assertiveness can improve one’s self-esteem.

6. Take On Challenges: People with low self-esteem often have tendencies to sidestep challenging and problematic situations. The best way to boost up your self-esteem can be to take on a difficulty. First, however, you can ask for help when you need it. For example, by achieving a goal, you show yourself that you have the ability to accomplish it. This can help you to replace your negative belief and will improve your self-esteem.

7. Be healthy mentally and physical :

When you have a healthy body and mind, it is much easier to feel good about yourself. However, people with low esteem often feel that they ‘deserve’ to be looked after. Getting enough sleep, a balanced diet, and regular exercise also help to improve low self-esteem. A small change in your daily routine can make a huge difference to your overall outlook.
