How to improve your focus and functional capacity with meditation, exercise, and sleep

According to recent studies, executive functioning—a component of attention that helps us prioritise what we want to focus on and block out undesirable distractions—can be improved by regular meditation, exercise, and sleep.

In the Klein Lab at Dalhousie University, which specialises in anything attention-related, I am presently working on my PhD. This includes both scientific study into how various brain regions affect how people engage with the outside world and practical research into creating game-like instruments to gauge children's attention. I just released a review of over 70 research that examined the effects of various lifestyle factors on attentiveness.

Functional Executive

In the lab, we dissect attention into a variety of distinct parts that each have a specific function. When you are attempting to focus in a distracting environment, such as maintaining a conversation while your favourite TV show is playing in the background or managing an impulse, such as fighting the want to eat another potato chip, executive functioning comes into play.

Monitoring for distracted ideas, such as being lost in a daydream, involves executive functioning as well. It is impacted by a variety of illnesses, such as depression and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

 

 In my review, I discovered that you may increase the effectiveness of your executive functioning by practising daily meditation, engaging in regular exercise, and upholding appropriate sleeping practises. Therefore, you might want to think about implementing these modifications to your routine if you want to increase your productivity and decrease your impulsivity.

Meditation

One of the finest methods to enhance executive functioning is through meditation. People's abilities to block out distractions improved even after just five days of regular 20-minute meditation sessions. When attentional control was the major goal, there didn't seem to be a better meditation practise (focusing on something specific). Focusing on breathing while making an effort to put unpleasant ideas aside is a typical strategy used in meditation to induce attentional control.

Studies have also examined yoga, which has elements like those of meditation. Although the yogis improved their overall reaction speed, yoga did not enhance executive functioning like other approaches where the primary objective was attentional control.

Although the duration of these attentional gains following meditation is unknown, it is obvious that anyone hoping to enhance their executive performance should make attention a regular habit.

 

 

Exercise

For health maintenance, the Canadian government advises those over 18 to engage in 150 minutes of physical activity each week. This is important for executive functioning as well. I investigated the effects of many variables on executive functioning, including the frequency, intensity, and kind of exercise that participants engaged in.

Compared to inactive people, those who reported taking six hours of exercise each week had better executive functioning. In addition, participants in a two-week high-intensity sprint programme scored better on tests of executive functioning than a control group and made fewer errors.

Standing and treadmill desks did enhance various physical health measures after just four days, but they did not have the same positive effects on cognition as other moderate- to high-intensity activities. This implies that you must substantially raise your heart rate if you want to experience those cognitive benefits.

 

 

Sleep

It's also critical to think about how much sleep you receive, as people frequently get less sleep to accommodate work and social commitments. Although a few research in the study did discover that less sleep led to lower executive functioning, the most typical result was all-around decreased performance. Different aspects of attention were not affected by less sleep in the same way that they were by meditation and exercise. Instead, it slowed down reaction times and increased error risk.

The majority of the review's studies on sleep, meanwhile, required keeping participants awake for a whole day. This isn't really typical of how most individuals feel when their sleep quality declines. Future studies should take into account how people's executive functioning is impacted by the quality of their sleep. This knowledge is crucial for persons who work in occupations where distractions might be dangerous, such as air traffic controllers or people who handle large machinery.

Numerous cognitive processes are subject to forces outside our control. Genetics has a significant genetic effect on executive functioning abilities. However, this study offers encouraging proof that there are adjustments you can make to your daily schedule that might give your attention a welcome boost.
