Test career 2013-2021
In November 2013, Shami made his Test debut at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, in front of his home fans against the West Indies. He claimed his first Test wicket in the opening innings, Kieran Powell, and concluded with figures of 4/71.[33] Taking 5/47 in the second innings.[33] His nine wickets for 118 runs in the match was more than Munaf Patel's seven wickets for 97 runs at Mohali in 2006, making him the most successful Indian bowler on debut. Having claimed 16 Test wickets overall, Shami was chosen for India's tour of South Africa and New Zealand.[35] But on India's 2014 tour of England, he was largely unsuccessful, taking just five wickets in three games.
During India's 2014–15 tour of Australia, he collected 15 wickets in three Test matches[40]. In 29 Tests, he became the 20th Indian fast bowler to reach 100 Test wickets.[41]
Playing in all five Test matches, he toured England with India in 2018. His total for the series was 16 wickets, six of which came in the fourth Test [42].[43]
In the recent India-West Indies two-match Test series during the 2019–21 ICC World Test Championship, Shami claimed nine wickets.[44]In the 2019 home series against South Africa, he took thirteen [46][47][48] and five in New Zealand (2020).49][50] He got two wickets in the second Test of Bangladesh's 2019–20 tour of India, which was played at Eden Gardens and included the playing XI for the first ever international pink ball Test match held in India.[51] In the course of this series, Shami went from taking seven wickets in the opening Test to ranking seventh in the ICC Men's Player Rankings.[52] At that time, his rating of 790 points was the third-highest for an Indian speed bowler, only surpassed by Kapil Dev (877) and Jasprit Bumrah (832).[53] While on the 2020–21 Australian tour, Shami
