Many people have what they think is a great idea and would love to start their own small business. The problem that many of these people face is how to finance this idea, how to get the business off the ground. Unfortunately, many of these ideas never come to fruition due to lack of funding, when in reality there are many avenues people could take to find that initial seed capital. I run a small business and have been doing it for about ten years. I remember in the beginning I was worried about how I would be able to afford to advertise the services I was offering. I would also need some amount to pay for marketing such as production of brochures and flyers, money for online presentation via website and many other start-up costs. I would also need to be able to pay my bills and basically live while the business is in its infancy because I realized that business would be slow at first. I must say that I am extremely lucky because I have a great family who are in a position and happy to support me financially from time to time. This was my first port of call. Not only did I go to see my parents looking for handouts, but I also went to tell them about what I thought was a great idea. I discussed with them my plans and where I thought the business could go in a few years. They both seemed impressed not only with my idea but also with the faith I had in it. I also talked about my short-term fear of not having enough money to start the business and pay rent etc. I asked them if they would be willing to invest in the idea by giving me a short-term loan. I planned to repay this loan in the future when the business was in a profitable position. Luckily for me, my parents agreed and I never looked back. They also gave me an interest free loan which was a real bonus. My father also suggested that I might benefit from having a partner. This person could not only bear half of the start-up costs, but could also help with even more ideas. He said he knew someone who might be interested. The person in question has been in business for a long time and could also teach me something. I agreed that it was a good idea and my father then approached his friend who eventually agreed to become my business partner. I am aware that I have been extremely lucky and that not everyone is as lucky as I am. However, there are other areas where people can try to raise funds. One is to go to the bank and try to get a business loan, which would probably be a better idea than going into debt on things like your credit cards. Another place to look might be reaching out to friends. I have a few friends who are not my business partners, but they are shareholders in a way. If you have some investments, you can dive in and fund the business right from the start. In my eyes, that's the whole point of investing in the first place, and entrepreneurship is also another form of investment. These are a few of the many routes that people can try. Give it a try, you might be surprised at how people respond.
