A toothache can strike anyone suddenly, and if you've ever had one, you know how painful it can be. A toothache can be caused by a number of different problems, including infection, a cavity, gum disease, a cracked tooth, fractured tooth or an exposed root.

No matter what is causing your toothache, it is important to seek treatment from a good and trusted dentist to prevent the problem from getting worse.

While you shouldn't put off seeking care, there are a number of helpful home remedies that can provide relief before you go to your appointment.

• Ice:

Applying ice to the world of a painful tooth can help relieve the pain. You will try different versions of this technique. Place a small ice cube in a towel and apply to the affected area. Keep the compress in place for 10 minutes. You also try to hold the cooled water in your mouth for a few seconds. But don't bite the ice, it could break your teeth.

• Tea bags:

This is my personal favorite remedy because it is very easy and quick. Just hold a warm or cold, moist mint tea bag between your teeth.
