How to get rid of dandruff naturally

Irrespective of the season, age group or gender, dandruff is a serious year-long problem that can have a negative impact on their psyche and skin. Ayurveda has a cure for every skin problem including dandruff.

Dandruff occurs when tiny bits of dry skin peel off your scalp as a result of overproduction of oil. As the layers of the skin are constantly replaced, the cells are pushed outwards, where they die and fall off. This phenomenon is most likely to happen in other parts of your body as well. The skin becomes dry, rough, itchy, and in some extreme cases, red and cracked.

When dandruff progresses from mild to severe, it can cause skin cells to multiply faster than normal, resulting in heavy flakes, persistent itching, and more visible swelling.

Causes of Dandruff:

Dry skin: During winters, due to lack of moisture in the air, the skin becomes dry faster, which can also lead to dandruff.

Contact dermatitis: Skin irritation caused by allergies or irritants resulting in an itchy and painful rash. This reaction happens on the scalp when there is dandruff. This is usually due to chemicals in the hair care product that you come into contact with.

Bad Shampooing Habits: Frequent hair washing can aggravate dandruff, leading to an excess buildup of oil, dust, grime and dead skin cells.

1. Tea Tree Oil and Virgin Coconut Oil:

In a mixing bowl, mix 5-10 drops of tea tree oil with 5 tablespoons of virgin coconut oil. Leave this nourishing mixture on your scalp and hair for 30 minutes.

Use a mild hair cleanser to remove it. Coconut oil is known for its ability to effectively hydrate and moisturize the skin. It also helps fight fungus and its antimicrobial properties aid in the treatment of eczema.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar:

Mix 2-3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with equal parts of water. Apply this mixture on your scalp and hair and leave it for 3-5 minutes.

Wash your hair gently with a mild hair cleanser. Regular use of apple cider vinegar balances the natural pH level of the scalp and helps in reducing dandruff.

3. Neem Leaves:

Take about 10-15 neem leaves and soak them in boiling water overnight. You can then grind it into a fine paste and mix it with 1-2 tbsp of curd.

Apply this hair mask for 30 minutes and then wash off. Regular use of neem leaves on hair will disinfect the fungus causing dandruff on your hair and scalp.

4. Baking Soda Powder:

Apply 2 tablespoons of baking soda powder directly to wet hair, massaging in circular motions with light hands. Let it sit for 2-3 minutes before rinsing off with a gentle hair cleanser.

Baking soda powder, when used as a mild exfoliant, removes excess dead cells from the surface of the scalp while reducing itching and inflammation, making it a natural scalp treatment for dandruff.

5. Organic Amla Powder and Tulsi Leaves:

In a mixing bowl, make a thin paste by mixing equal parts of organic amla powder and water. Make a paste by grinding 8-10 basil leaves and mixing them with water.

Apply this paste well on your scalp and leave it for 30 minutes. Use a mild hair cleanser to remove it.

The high vitamin C content of amla and the antibacterial properties of tulsi aid in the treatment of dandruff.

6. Fenugreek Seeds and Lemon Juice:

Soak 2 tbsp fenugreek seeds in a bowl of water overnight. In the morning, use a blender to make a fine, thin paste from the soaked fenugreek seeds.

Add a teaspoon of lemon juice to this paste. Mix well and apply on your scalp and hair.

Leave it on for 30 minutes before removing it with a gentle hair cleanser of your choice. This mask will help restore the health of your scalp and prevent hair fall and dandruff.
