TYPES & BENEFITS OF EXERCISE & RISKS OF NOT DOING SO
Exercise mainly involves engaging in physical activity resulting in increasing the heart rate beyond resting levels. It is an essential part of restoring physical and mental health.
This article explains the different types of exercise, their benefits, and the contemplations for designing a fitness mechanism.
Generally, exercise is divided into three main categories, which are explained as under;
- AEROBIC EXERCISE: The primary role of aerobic exercise is to improve the blood supply of oxygen. Aerobic exercise mainly involves warming up and exercising for at least 20 to 30 minutes. Most of the large muscles are involved in this type of exercise. The essential benefits of aerobic exercise are improved strength of lungs and heart muscle, lowering of blood pressure, increase in the number of red blood cells, improvement in blood circulation, reduces the risk of diabetes and stroke, improvement in the symptoms of coronary diseases, and overall enhances stamina by increasing the body’s ability to store energy molecules, such as fats and carbohydrates, within the muscle.
- ANAEROBIC EXERCISE: This type of exercise does not involve the use of oxygen for energy. These exercises are highly intensive. Aerobic exercise mainly includes weightlifting, intensive skipping with a rope, and sprinting. This mode of training is primarily based on short intervals. Anaerobic exercise is more effective than the aerobic type of exercise for building muscle and improving strength.
- AGILITY TRAINING: Generally, athletes who heavily rely on positioning, coordination, speed, and balance need to engage in agility training regularly. The sports that require agility are cricket, tennis, soccer, hockey, boxing, wrestling, etc.
Besides the types mentioned above of exercises, some combine stretching, muscle conditioning, and balance training. A most effective and popular and example is yoga.
Yoga movements improve balance, flexibility, posture, and circulation. Yoga practice originated in India thousands of years ago, and it aims to unify the mind, body, and spirit. Modern yoga employs a combination of meditation, posture, and breathing exercises to achieve the equivalent goals.
A yoga practitioner can design a course for individual needs. A person looking to manage arthritis problems might need gentle stretches to enhance mobility and function. Someone with depression, on the opposite side, may need more attention towards relaxation and deep breathing elements of yoga.
Pilates is another stretching example that enhances flexibility and core strength. Tai chi is also a practical option for exercise that assists in calm stretching instead of intensity.
- RISKS OF NOT EXERCISING: The risk of not exercising may comprise but is not limited to premature death from all causes, including the complications of being overweight and obese.
Exercise is occasionally a gradual learning curve. A person should spread sessions across the week and scale up the intensity slowly.
A person needs to make sure they drink plenty of water during and after exercise. A visit to a doctor is a reasonable precaution; if someone has a health problem or injury that could affect exercise levels or make exercise worse.
While a mixture of aerobic and anaerobic exercise provides the most benefit, any training is better for someone with an inactive lifestyle.
