How to Gain Views on TikTok: My Experience and Best Tips

TikTok has exploded in popularity over the last few years, becoming one of the top social media platforms. The app makes it easy for anyone to create fun short videos and potentially reach a massive audience. But competition is fierce and gaining views as a new creator can feel impossible.

As someone actively working to build my TikTok channel, I've tested a variety of legit tactics for getting more eyes on my videos. It requires patience and persistence, but I’m steadily gaining followers and views. In this post I’ll share what I’ve learned about succeeding on TikTok organically.

Optimize Your Channel

Treat your TikTok profile like an extension of your personal brand. A polished channel gives viewers instant insight into who you are and why they should follow you.

Upload a clean profile photo and write an informative bio sharing your niche and what you offer. Link to your other social profiles so fans can engage across platforms.

Organize your best old videos into themed collections titled based on their content. This helps new visitors quickly see your areas of expertise.

Go through and delete any old videos which no longer fit your brand or meet your current quality standards. Inactive accounts with haphazard content won’t attract followers.

Be Consistent

Posting frequently is key for TikTok because the shelf life of individual videos tends to be short. Staying top of mind increases the odds people will interact with your latest videos.

Set a goal for how often you will post per week, such as 5 times per week to start. Then set reminders on your calendar to batch film videos so you have a backlog ready to go.

Use the scheduling tool within TikTok to queue videos to auto-post daily even when you don’t have time to actively promote each one.

Consistency trains the TikTok algorithm to show your account to more users. So even if watch time is low on one video, keep posting to leverage the algorithm over time.

Hook Viewers Right Away

You only have seconds to grab attention as viewers quickly flip through videos on their For You feed. If you don't hook them upfront, they will keep scrolling.

Write compelling captions using power words that create intrigue and urgency to click. Ask leading questions or tease exclusive content to come.

Film eye-catching intros to showcase your personality quickly. Do a lively dance, show an interesting prop or demonstrate a step of your tutorial.

Use text overlays throughout to call out key points. Highlight your @username to make it easy for intrigued viewers to instantly follow.

Reply to Comments

When someone takes time to comment, always respond. Thank them for watching and answer any questions asked.

Ask follow up questions to spark continued conversation around your video and brand.

Liking viewer comments also helps increase engagement.

Interacting makes viewers feel valued as more than just a view count. They’ll be more invested in your brand and future videos.

Collaborate on Duets

Duets allow TikTok creators to respond to each other’s videos collaboratively.

Keep an eye out for rising stars or established influencers posting videos aligned with your niche. Use the Duets feature respond adding your commentary or a demonstration.

Politely tag their @username in your written captions and on-video text comments.

With any luck, the original creator will be flattered and share your contribution with their own following.

Cross-Promote Other Videos

Direct existing viewers to more of your top content by prominently cross-promoting other videos.

Within your written captions, add links to a few of your most popular past videos. Hyperlink the titles so viewers can simply click to watch them next.

End each video with a strong call to action. Verbally suggest 1-2 other videos on your profile they should view next if the enjoyed the current one.

Cross-promotion keeps viewers consuming your content, rather than losing them to random unrelated videos in their feeds.

Post Short Previews

Short teaser videos pique curiosity and bait viewers into watching your full content.

Edit down older videos into 10-60 second previews focused on the most engaging parts.

Post the teaser first as its own stand-alone video. Encourage clicks to your profile link to see the full video.

Test posting the full-length and teaser version back to back. The preview hooks viewers scrolling, then immediately offers the complete video while their interest is peaked.

Follow Trends Selectively

Challenges, memes, dances and other trends dominate the TikTok landscape. But competing in busy challenges isn't easy for small creators.

Strategically participate in trends aligned with your niche where you can offer value others may lack. Put your own branded twist on trending content.

Hypertarget by starting your own niche challenge catering to your specialized audience.

Use Sounds Strategically

What sounds you add greatly affects what videos TikTok recommends your content alongside.

Analyze which sounds, songs or audio clips often appear alongside top videos in your niche. Identify lesser-used sounds your audience would also enjoy.

Browse trending sounds and consider how you could apply them distinctly to your brand. Put your own twist on a trending sound niche communities will appreciate.

Curate custom branded soundbites to unify your channel. Encourage viewers to use them by adding your unique sounds to popular videos.

Appeal to Your Niche

As on any social platform, taking a niche approach is vital for standing out on TikTok. Identify micro-interests and underserved viewer needs not met by competing big names. Tailor both your content style and messaging to resonate uniquely with your ideal viewer.

Making content tailored for a niche audience makes videos more discoverable. And viewers appreciate content specifically made for people like them rather than the mainstream. So laser focus on an engaged subgroup and address viewer pain points better than anyone else.

Gaining views and followers does not happen instantly. But applying these organic growth strategies while consistently making high-quality, niche-focused videos lets your gradually build a channel viewers love. What works well for one channel won't necessarily work for others. So try out different approaches and double down on what sticks best with your audience!
