As a freelance writer, you probably spend hours scanning free job boards looking for telecommunication writing jobs - in other words, freelance writing jobs you can do from home. Many websites have a list of non-paying jigs in their paid job postings, and it can take an hour or more each day to get through this mess. Needless to say, just because a job is listed as a freelance job doesn't necessarily mean you can work from home. Many job posters are looking for freelance writers who will come to your place of business and write on the site. For those of us freelance writers who do telecom, it just complicates our job search.
My daily freelance writing job search on free job boards consists of the following: I pull up Indeed dot com and enter several groups of search terms, such as "freelance writer" and "writer" "telecommute" - There are at least a dozen keyword groups I search after, but you get the idea. Then, I go to Journalism Jobs dot com, Write Jobs dot com, and even online writing jobs.com. This is followed by Craigslist, its gigs of non-paying gigs, gigs that only pay for advertising revenue, and gigs that list "TBD" in the payment line. After much practice, I have limited my job search system to a half-hour process. Of course, this is search time only and does not include time spent responding to ads, attaching resume / write patterns, etc.
As seems to be the trend in the world of freelance writing, most job posters never respond. Some people who are interested can ask for follow-up details and then disappear from the face of the earth, often because they can't find my prices within their $3 per article budget. Let's face it - the search for telecom writing jobs on free job boards can be daunting.
So, what are the alternatives to looking for telecom written jobs on free job boards? Pay membership fees to sites like Go Freelance dot com, Just Markets dot com. Or, go to job bidding sites like Lance, dot com or Writer lance dot com. But, what about the people who can't afford the fees? Chances are, if you're just starting out, your budget won't allow you to have such luxury prices. While membership sites may consider legitimate business deductions for tax purposes (depending on where you live), the most important thing is that the money will start out of your pocket, even if you deduct your taxes later.
Of course, there are traditional ways to find telecommunications writing jobs, such as creating a website to advertise your freelance writing services, and visiting job sites that allow you to post freelance writing resumes for free. Posting in freelance writing forums and networking with other authors can help you gain clients. Starting a blog is another way to get the attention of many freelance writers. Paying per click ads and even writing articles for submission to free directories can help. Yet, for most freelance writers, most jobs still come from taking the time to look for online telecom writing jobs.
Unfortunately, there is no way to find a telecom writing job that will take some time or money. However, by joining the job search routine and using bookmarks and job feeds to your advantage, you can speed up the process and make things a little less frustrating for yourself.
