How To Find Out If You Have Skin Cancer

The process of detecting skin cancer, the most common form of cancer in the United States, can be practiced with a monthly self-examination, along with an annual visit to your doctor. Early detection is key because, if diagnosed early, skin cancer is almost always curable.

There are three main types of skin cancer, all of which are visible if you know what to look for. Melanoma, one of the major forms of skin cancer, is the deadliest. Once the disease has spread throughout the body, it is most difficult to prevent, so early detection and treatment is very important. Skin cancer, of any type, can usually be successfully treated in its early stages.

As an individual, everyone has freckles, birthmarks and moles. They are a part of you and you are used to seeing them, but you may not notice the slightest change right away and this is what you need to see. Any changes in the shape, edges, size or color of the mole should be checked by a doctor. If the mole is larger than the pencil sharpener or has several shades of brown instead of solid color, these are both possible warning signs of skin cancer. The mole border should be well defined and, if this is no longer the case, notify your doctor. In addition, any wound that will not heal or a mole that grows too fast should be examined immediately.

It is difficult to decide whether to seek medical help. For this reason, it is best to choose a physician who you agree with, such as a family doctor. They can examine your skin and refer you to a dermatologist if needed. The presence of skin cancer is determined by removing all or part of the objectionable area and examining it under a microscope. Surgery is often used to remove ski cancer and, if performed in the early stages, can be a very fast procedure. There may be a scar, but the doctor may be able to completely remove all the cancer cells with just a very small incision.

If the cancer has spread, or is too large in a designated area, additional surgery may be needed. In this case, chemotherapy or radiation therapy may be ordered to ensure the cancer is completely removed. Your doctor will be able to answer all the questions you may have and should do so without reservation. When seeing a doctor, ask for an explanation of all treatment options, including the chances of success in your particular case. Deciding to seek medical help is a big step and the patient must be mentally prepared for it.

This article should not be construed as professional medical advice. If you, or someone you know, is concerned about the possibility of cancer, you should seek medical help immediately. If cancer is detected, the doctor may discuss various options, prevention and treatment options. A series of tests can be performed to confirm or rule out any such diagnosis and this can only be done by a medical doctor.
