How to Empower your manager

Much of what we call management consists of making it harder for people to work.

Management is often equated with controls rather than managing and developing a business. The manager feels more comfortable and secure when they can exercise tight control over everything that happens in a business organization. This is especially true for Senior Management, where the controls and direction become too severe and middle managers erode any creative freedom to work towards achieving the goals set for them.

Here are a few simple recipes for getting the most out of your managers.

Avoid Centralizing Decision-Making

This is perhaps one of the best ways to maintain total control. You feel you can avoid wrong decisions by centralizing decision-making. While this may be so to some extent, who will prevent your own misjudgments? You will never develop expertise through experience unless your managers make mistakes and learn from them. Centralizing the decision-making process is also the surest way to stop your business from growing.

Provide Workspace

Top management usually assigns duties and responsibilities to their subordinates. It is discussed more often than specific time periods that are comfortable for the performance of assigned responsibilities or duties. However, in their anxiety or aggression, and sometimes in their over zealousness, you start chasing your subordinate for action and results. If you do this too early and too often, you severely limit your managers' workspace. They may be spending more time obeying your commands rather than focusing on operational priorities and important tasks.

If you don't provide enough workspace for your managers, you are definitely headed for disaster, as important tasks may be neglected to avoid frequent and aggressive stalking.

Listen to Your Managers

While experience is an asset, it makes one arrogant and arrogant. Sometimes people tend to believe because they are superior, they are always right. The Boss Is Always Right, principle only looks good on posters. It won't work if you want to set up a professional organization.

Improve the ability to listen to the voices of your managers. Often times, they know better because they are more familiar with the ground facts. If you decide on their behalf and just give orders, you will have officers disguised as managers for killing their initiative.

Once broad goals and objectives are set with specific timeframes and key results are summarized, let your managers implement them. If you go into too much detail and meddle in execution at every stage, you can be sure to ruin the whole process and ultimately the results.

The key to managing effectively is to empower people throughout the management structure to feel part of the responsibility and ownership.
