The planet Earth rotates around its own axis, and this rotation, also known as its spin, is the result of variations in the rotation axis's direction in space. Earth spins in a prograde motion, towards the east. Earth rotates counterclockwise as seen from the northern polar star Polaris.

The North Pole, sometimes referred to as the Geographic North Pole or the Terrestrial North Pole, is the location in the Northern Hemisphere where the Earth's surface and rotational axis meet. This is not the same as the North Magnetic Pole of Earth. The South Pole, located in Antarctica, is the other location on Earth's surface where the axis of rotation intersects.

Earth's rotation was assumed by Hicetas, Heraclides, and Ecphantus in the fourth century BCE, but they did not propose that Earth circled around the Sun, supporting a more traditional view. Aristarchus of Samos proposed the Sun's central position in the third century BCE.

True solar day or apparent solar day is determined by Earth's rotation time with respect to the Sun (from solar noon to solar noon).[26] Changes in the eccentricity and inclination of Earth's orbit have an impact on it since it is dependent on the planet's orbital motion. The yearly fluctuation of the true solar day fluctuates as well, since both change over tens of thousands of years. It is typically longer than the mean solar day for two months out of the year and shorter for the remaining two.[n2] The Sun appears to travel along the ecliptic at a greater angle than usual at perihelion, when the genuine solar day typically lasts an extra 10 seconds. On the other hand, it is roughly 10 seconds.
