Before the new war game Medal of Honor: Limited Editionwas released, there was a battle about it.
Complaints and criticism from family and friends of soldiers killed in Afghanistan mounted when it was clear from demos and beta versions of the multiplayer portion of the game that you could fight as a Taliban. In early October Electronic Arts changed the feature.
In a note on the game's official web site explaining the about-face on using the Taliban name, executive producer Greg Goodrich writes, "we are making this change for the men and women serving in the military and for the families of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice - this franchise will never willfully disrespect, intentionally or otherwise, your memory and service."
Still, the game has its rough edges. One of the first words out of your Allied trooper's mouth in the game's opening sequence is the f-bomb and the rest of your Special Forces soldiers race around swearing like sailors.
War is hell, and it's probably especially so in the rugged mountains and valleys of Afghanistan. It's also bloody, chaotic and deadly -- something that "Medal of Honor" from EA and developers Dice and Danger Close captures admirably. I don't know if this first-person shooter game is truly realistic, because I have never served, but it plays as realistically as any war game I've played.
In Medal of Honor, on shelves today, you can either play as an Allied (now called "Tier 1" or "Coalition") soldier. Or, you can pick up an AK-47 as a Taliban fighter, though that word has been scrubbed and replaced by the more anodyne "Opfor," an abbreviation of the term "opposing force" sometimes used by the jargon-speaking public affairs captains the military parades in front of the media to describe battlefield situations.
Nomenclature aside, this new title is rock solid if you like first-person shooters. It plays better and more realistically than Halo: Reach and lacks the pretense and stilted wannabe movie story line of Mafia II. I like the Call of Duty games, but this iteration of Medal of Honor blows them all away with its simple backstory, clean maps, spartan heads-up display and controls and fast-paced gameplay.
You're in Afghanistan. You're an elite soldier. You're there to carry out missions, such as finding a village elder in the town of Gardez who has information you need to know. And you'll stab, shoot or blow up anyone standing in the way of your team's mission.
