When you work in Adobe Premiere Pro every day, it's easy to get stuck in old habits. And while you may be incredibly fast with your old habits, you may also be missing out on some new ways to use software that will improve your workflows.
In this article, I'm going to show you a few things I've been using lately that have really improved the way I use the program. I should note that none of this will necessarily make you a "better" editor, but knowing the intricacies of your software is critical to working in a team with other creative professionals.

Adobe Premiere Pro is a (non-linear editor) with the main function of editing video clips together in a sequence. This is the program that most beginners will open to create a simple video.
Organize your projects with audio and video usage metadata.
My first simple but useful tool for you is in the Premiere Pro Project panel. By default, Premiere Pro displays columns of valuable metadata in a list view. This is great because you can sort and reorder columns here. But did you know you can add additional metadata columns? There are also some useful tools that will make organizing your projects much easier.
To change the metadata columns, right-click the column header and select View Metadata. In the dialog that opens, you can browse through all the available metadata options. I've included something called Usage in my metadata columns. You can find it in the top bar and check Video Usage and Audio Usage.

Now back in the Project panel, you will see two new columns, one for Video Usage and one for Audio Usage. If you scroll down to find a clip in a bin that was used on the timeline, you'll see a number in either of these columns depending on whether you used video only, audio only, or both.
A "1" next to the IMG_5161.MOV clip means that the video was used in the timeline.

But it's much more interesting because by clicking on that usage number and selecting a usage item from the drop-down list, Premiere Pro will automatically take you directly to the location on the timeline where you used it.
This is useful for many reasons, but especially if you're using stock footage for b-roll. It's useful to see if you've already used an entry. You don't want to include that shot of office workers walking down the hall in slow motion twice (maybe once was too many).
Saving bin and column views,
adding these columns to the Project panel is a good start. But did you know that you can also save this metadata layout and recall it later? Here is the tutorial.
To get started, set up a column layout that works for you. This is my layout for checking proxy files on my projects:

Click the hamburger menu in the Project panel and scroll down to Save as a new view preset. Now we can do it again with some new columns.
This is my layout because when I'm in the middle of editing I like to keep those Usage columns open and close to the filenames.
