STORY: Sarju a tribal man with prodigious archery skills, transforms into an assassin to protect his people from the merciless modern world.
REVIEW: Sidharth, who has previously directed gripping thrillers such as 'Apharan,' 'Undekhi,' and 'Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein,' comes up with an intriguing story that pits tribal people against the modern world in a struggle to survive. AAR YA PAAR follows self-sufficient Degohaati tribal who live in the dense jungle. But when Reuben's mining company discovers a Uranium ore deposit near the forest, their lives are upended. Reuben is eager to amass wealth and has his sights set on the land, putting Degohaati's fate in jeopardy. As a result, Sarju, the son of a tribal leader and a skilled archer, embarks on a mission to save his people.
Pullappaa, a contract killer who employs trained tribal as his hitmen, Aditya, a special crime branch officer on trial for the suspects to capture him, and Dr Sangamitra, a doctor who wants to aid tribal, are all involved in parallel plots that heighten the drama and take the story forward.
Set amidst misty hills and waterfalls, nestled amongst thick jungle trees, this eight-part series begins slowly, with proceedings that are simple, straight, and easy to follow. It may take some time for the initial episodes to sink in, but once Sarju is on his revenge mission, the story takes an engrossing turn. The story is written in an authentic and realistic manner. For instance, the scenes in which Sarju first enters the city are well-written and effectively convey the struggle of someone entering a completely new world. However, there are times when it appears that things are too conveniently placed for the protagonist. There are definitely a lot of gore and killings, but one cannot deny the fact that the drama is laced with some nail-biting sequences, especially in episode seven, named ‘Final Countdown’.
Having said that, Aditya and Ashish Vidyarthi remain this drama’s lifeblood. The actors deliver honest performances. Aditya excels in his action scenes, and Ashish is brilliant at portraying a menacing character. In fact, each time the actors appear on the screen, they put on a powerful show. Dibyendu plays his part convincingly, too.
The supporting cast, such as Shilpa, Vaarun and Sumeet, has very little to contribute to the series. Though Vyas is an interesting narrator, it would have been a great deal better if all of these characters were curated with more attention. In fact, even Patralekha’s character, Sanghamitra, who’s a doctor and connects with the tribal, falls short in terms of an emotional curve.
The action choreography of the series, particularly in Sarju’s fighting scenes right from the beginning till the climax, is quite cool. The cinematography, background score, and VFX earn it some plus points. Even the costumes and makeup are flawlessly executed to make the tribal people look authentic.
To sum it up, Sidharth should be appreciated for thinking differently and creating an engaging series that will keep you entertained throughout. Watch 'AAR YA PAAR' for its out-of-the-box concept, flawless execution, and stellar performances.
