How to Create Photo to Digital Painting Effect
Hello Everyone. In this tutorial, I will show you how to make this Digital Painting Effect in photoshop. After following this tutorial, you will create your PSD file, which will be used to re-apply the same effect on any new image with a SINGLE CLICK.
Step 1. Creating A New Document
let's get started! First, let's begin by creating a New Document. Set Width to 3200Px, Height to 2000Px, with 300 resolution and RGB Color Mode, then click Create. Now let's import the pattern that we'll work with. I've made this pattern from the Van Gogh Starry Night painting. You can download it from the description below. It has the same dimension as the main document, so you only need to press ENTER to confirm. Now let's import the image that we want to apply the effect on. Resize it to fill the canvas, then press ENTER. Drag it below the Pattern layer. Then select the pattern layer and change its blending mode to Overlay with 50% Opacity.
Now let's create a Vibrance Layer at the top like that—Set Vibrance to +40, and Saturation to +20. Create a Brightness & Contrast Layer. Increase Brightness to 20. Now I want to make a bright object out of these four layers. But before doing that, I need to hide or remove this extra part from my main image. Just press CTRL+A to select the whole canvas. And with your layer selected, click on the mask icon to create a mask from your selection like that. Hold the SHIFT key and click on the top layer to select all four layers. Right-click and choose Convert to Smart Object. To open the bright object, double-click on its thumbnail like that.
Now we are inside the bright object. Now we are inside the intelligent thing. And If you go to Image Size, you'll see that the bright object has the same dimension as the main document. And that's why we made the mask step! And without that step, your brilliant object dimension will be set to the most prominent image like that. And we don't want that as it will give you incorrect results. Now let's get back to our main document to Rename the bright object and delete the "Background" layer.
Step 2. Create The Effect.
First, select your layer, then go Filterter> Sharpen> and choose the Unsharp Mask filter. Change Amount to 60, Radius to 20, and Threshold to 4. This will sharpen the overall image like that. Click OK, and let's add some noise from the "Add Noise" filter. Amountount to 15 with "Uniform" Distribution, and Click are OK. Now allow's apply the Oil Paint filter. Now Change its values to 8, 5, 2, and 0. Check Lighting and change angle to 0 and shine to 2. Click OK, and let's see the result! Oil Paint does a better job with sharp images. That's why we added both Sharpen And Noise filters. Now allow's apply the Unsharp Mask filter again. ChanAmount Amount to 60, Radius to 4, with 0 Threshold. and click OK. Now go to the Filter Gallery. And under the "Artistic" folder, choose the "Cutout" filter. Change it to 8, 6, and 3. As you can see, the Cutout filter combined with the Oil Paint filter and the pattern will give you that fantastic effect!
Now let's open the filter gallery again. Choose the Dry Brush filter. Could you change it to 2, 8, and 1? This will convert the final result into a digital painting made of brush strokes like that. Click OK, and let's continue. Finally, allow's apply the Emboss Filter. Just Change the Angle to any value, Height to 3Px, with 100% Amount. Then click OFilters filter creates a 3D depth at each outline in your image. Now double-click on this little icon to open the Emboss filter blending options. Change the Blending mode to Overlay and click OK. If you zoom in, you'll see that each stroke has a little 3d depth like that. Now let's add some adjustment layers.
Just select your layer, and create a Vibrance layer. Change Vibrance to +15 and Saturation to +7. Create an Exposure layer. Change its values depending on your image. Create a Selective Color layer. I usually use selective colors to adjust Whites, Neutrals, and Black. Select each color and keep moving all sliders in both directions until you have a good result. Please note that you'll need to update both Exposure & Selective Color values each time, depending on your image. Now here is the Before & After.
Step 3. Update the effect with a click.
First, you should save this project as a PSD file for any future use. Choose PSD file type from here and click Save. And to apply the effect entirely on a new image. You will need to open the bright object by double-clicking its thumbnail like that! Once you're inside your bright object, Go and import your new image below the pattern layer like that—Press CTRL+S to update your brilliant thing. Get back to your main document. And That's it! Let's take another example.
First, double-click your intelligent object thumbnail to open it. Under the pattern, the layer goes and imports your new image. Resize your photo and press ENTER. Press CTRL+S to update your effect. Get back to your main document. You may find some missing parts like that. Just go and double-click on the 2nd "FilteFilterery" filter to open it. Here you will find the cutout filter, which is the primary controller for this effect. You'll only need to play with its values until you get a good result. Once you finish, click OK, and your image will be updated. Update both Exposure & Selective Color Layers. And that's it for today!
