How To Choose Your Affiliate Program Wisely

Affiliate marketing programs have grown in popularity over the years.  Millions of people are jumping on the bandwagon as the fastest and easiest way to start an online home business.  Affiliate programs give merchants the opportunity to hire a large army of sales people who are paid for the results they achieve.

Rewards for affiliates can be great, and skilled affiliate marketers can make several thousand dollars a month.  This win-win situation has led to an explosion in the number of affiliate programs available to affiliate marketers.

With this increase in affiliate opportunities, many questions have arisen, such as: How do you choose the right affiliate program for you?  What qualities should you look for in a program that gives you a good chance of earning a sustainable income?  Below are some tips that will help you evaluate affiliate programs and help you waste time and money.

What commission does the program pay?

It is important to know how much revenue you can expect from sales.  There is no point in spending time and money promoting a product that pays very little commission.  You can spend more on marketing than sales.  It is probably best to stick to marketing products with high commission value, unless you can find a specific market where you can sell many products and earn huge commissions on your sales.

How much traffic is their website getting?

Try to find out how much traffic the affiliate owner's website is already receiving.   "Alexa.com" is a very useful tool for doing this research.  If the website is ranked in the top 100,000, the merchant is getting good traffic, so it is possible that there may already be a lot of affiliates.  If it ranks below 500,000 it is not good, or it could be a golden opportunity to make some real money by becoming one of the first affiliates!

If the merchant's website has a low traffic ranking, always research his product.  If you can afford it, it may be a good idea to buy the product yourself.  Otherwise, you can search the internet to see if there are any negative reviews about it.  Yet, be careful who you listen to because many people have a habit of hitting affiliate programs when there is nothing to support their comments.  If you find many negative reviews with few positive reviews, it may be a good idea to stay away from those affiliate programs.

How often are affiliate commissions paid?

Some affiliate programs pay a commission per week;  Once every few months, others only pay every quarter.  If you have financial control over your business, it is important to know how often you can expect a paycheck.  If you have to wait a long time before you get paid, do you have the financial resources to continue marketing the product?  It would also be wise to find out the minimum commission you will receive before paying your salary.

Does the affiliate program use tracking cookies?

Many consumers do not purchase the merchant's website on their first visit.  So it is important that the merchant uses cookies for their affiliate program, so that you will get credit if the customer returns and makes a purchase at a later date.  See how long cookies last.  The longer the cookies last;  The better the chances of you getting paid!

Does the affiliate program pay for subsequent sales?

Some programs only pay a commission on sales from customers who visit their site through a direct link from your site.  If the customer visits the merchant's site directly, they will not charge you for any subsequent purchase.  If you want to build a sustainable affiliate business, it is important that you get paid no matter which way the customer returns.

What marketing resources does affiliate program offer?

See the type and quality of marketing resources they provide.  Do they provide articles, advertisements or other content that you can use to place your site?  Do they offer free guides, special offers, free viral e-books or product samples that you can send to your catalog?  If the marketing materials they provide are good, the business is likely to support their affiliates well.

Finding the right affiliate program for you can be difficult.  The best advice is to do your own research, follow the advice above, and listen to your intuition.  Use the above questions to find affiliate programs that enable you to reach your financial goals.  You never know ... you might strike affiliate marketing gold!
