Did you know that there are hundreds of different breeds of dogs? When deciding to get a dog, choosing the right breed for you and your family is important. With so many types of dogs available, this can be quite a daunting task. Fortunately, there are ways you can narrow down your options in some way, making everything a lot easier.
First and foremost you should consider one major factor… .. How much space do you have? If you live in an apartment there is no point in finding a large dog that takes up a lot of space and may need a lot of exercise. For residential areas with limited space, consider a group of toy dogs such as the Terrier Group or the Miniature Pinscher. And the cost of keeping your dog should be considered. Very large dogs can eat a large amount of food and small dogs will eat very little. Try to calculate the cost of a few different dogs over a 12-month period. Consider diet and regular visits to the veterinarian for vaccinations, worms etc. You will see that large dogs are often very expensive to keep.
If you have children, you may want to consider what kind of dog would be appropriate for them. Children may at times be overwhelmed by pets; getting a Chihuahua for example may not be a good idea as it is a soft animal. Similarly, having a Great Dane or Saint Bernard looting a house can be dangerous for a child. The age and number of children you have should be considered as this will affect which type of dog will best suit your circumstances.
Another important point to consider is how much exercise you can give your dog. If you have a yard of the right size, a fence will provide a good place for your dog to exercise. If you live in an apartment, consider getting a dog that needs very little exercise. A happy Border collie can be a bad choice in apartment life. Also, how much exercise can you endure? There is no need to find a dog that needs as much exercise as a hunting or Sporting dog breed if you cannot keep up with the exercise. Try and find a dog that suits your lifestyle.
Training your dog is something you should think about. If you do not have much time to relax in your life try to avoid dog breeds such as Standard Poodle that will require regular grooming sessions. Short-haired Terriers or Whippets make a good choice for someone with limited time to sit and groom themselves for many hours at a time. On the other hand, if you have a lot of free time, regular grooming sessions with your dog will give both of you a lot of quality time that you both will enjoy.
When choosing your dog, look at the big picture. Try to resist the temptation to look for the best, most lovable dog you can find. Think about your lifestyle, your home, your family and try to find the type of dog that best suits your health. After all, your new dog will share with you your life for many years to come so making sure you both are happy is an important thing to consider.
