Joint pain is a very common symptom of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, both of which are chronic illnesses that can affect the sufferer for a long time. Arthritis is incurable, but symptoms can be treated with a variety of products and methods. Sports-related activities and falls and other trauma can damage the cartilage within the joint and, if not given enough time to heal, chronic pain and persistent paralysis can follow. In addition, damage to the surface of the bone can initiate biological processes that lead to joint degeneration. This, too, often leads to rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. This is a brief review of some of the products currently available, with a prescription and over the counter, to treat the symptoms of arthritis, especially joint pain.
Acetaminophen
Acetaminophen is a pain reliever but does not reduce inflammation, which is a common symptom associated with certain types of arthritis, especially rheumatoid arthritis. As such acetaminophen, better known as Tylenol, may be effective in people with osteoarthritis who often have very little inflammation. In addition, acetaminophen does not cause stomach upset and is less likely to have non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), described later, to produce long-term side effects. Studies have shown that acetaminophen relieves pain as well as NSAIDs in many patients with osteoarthritis. People with liver disease, people who drink heavily, and those who take blood - thinner medications or NSAIDs should use acetaminophen with caution.
Ibuprofen
Ibuprofen is a pain reliever that combines anti-inflammatory properties with pain relief. People with rheumatoid arthritis often experience inflammatory pain and often benefit from aspirin or ibuprofen, less familiar with Motrin and Advil. Unfortunately, the products of ibuprofen and aspirin often cause stomach upset when taken without food and linked to long-lasting ulcers.
What Causes Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Scientists are researching dangerous substances that increase the risk of arthritis. Some of these features have been identified. For example, in osteoarthritis, hereditary cartilage weakness or excessive stress on the joint due to repetitive strain injuries may play a role. In rheumatoid arthritis, a combination of genetic factors and natural causes are believed to be important.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
This class of drugs includes aspirin and ibuprofen as well as Vioxx (rofecoxib), Celebrex (celecoxib), and Bextra (valdecoxib), classified as COX-2 inhibitors. Aspirin and ibuprofen are used to reduce pain and inflammation, as noted above, and may be used for both short-term and long-term relief in people with osteoarthritis but are commonly used to treat rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. Other drugs under NSAIDs are COX-2 inhibitors that work by blocking an enzyme that is known to cause an inflammatory response. COX-2 inhibitors were approved for temporary use in the treatment of pain, as well as long-term use to treat the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis and arthritis.
Side effects associated with NSAIDs include stomach upset, adverse effects on kidney function, and are often associated with major intestinal problems, including ulcers, bleeding, and gastrointestinal or intestinal perforation. Therefore, people over the age of 65 and those with a history of ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding should use NSAIDs with caution. Like most drugs, the longer a person uses NSAIDs, the more likely they are to have side effects. In addition, because of the way NSAIDs alter the body's ability to use or eliminate certain drugs, many other drugs cannot be taken when a patient is treated with NSAIDs. It is important to consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist before taking NSAIDs over other medications.
