Lithium-ion batteries are lighter and more portable than other types of batteries. Generally speaking, the weight of a 12v lithium-ion battery is 0.7 kg (12v 6ah), which is only one-third of that of lead-acid batteries of the same specification.

In addition, the voltage of lithium-ion single-cell batteries is also higher than other batteries, ranging from 3.2 to 3.7v. Find the positive and negative points of the battery

How to check which batteries, the first step, you need to connect the battery to a device called a Voltmeter. This device is used to check the charging level of the battery by displaying the voltage reading of the battery. This device has two wires connected to the negative and positive terminals of the battery to obtain the required measurement values.

To find the negative and positive poles of a small handheld battery, the flat end is usually the negative pole, while the sharp protruding end is the positive pole. For larger lithium batteries, search for terminals marked with positive (+) and negative (-) on the battery pack.

This measurement method can also be used for other rechargeable battery types except for lithium batteries, such as Alkaline batteries and lead-acid batteries.

Change the reading setting of the Voltmeter to DC voltage

Voltmeter is a dynamic measuring tool, which can measure both AC and DC charges. Regardless of the type, all batteries store and release DC power, so when measuring voltage readings, the Voltmeter must be set to read DC power. On most Voltmeter, you can change this setting by simply turning a button with a clear indication (AC) to the (DC) side.

Most modern Voltmeters require you to set a maximum current level for the battery you are testing. You can understand the actual voltage level of the battery you want to test by reading the label next to the battery, which should help you know the maximum level the battery should reach.

Connect the Voltmeter to the corresponding terminal of the battery

In the third step of how to check which batteries, you need to connect the negative and positive wires called wires to the negative and positive terminals of the battery.

Most Voltmeters are of a similar design, and you can easily distinguish between the positive and negative leads. The black probe or lead on the Voltmeter usually represents the negative pole and can be connected to the corresponding negative bar on the battery. In addition, the red probe or wire on the Voltmeter represents the positive pole, which can be connected to the positive pole of the battery.

Although most batteries will not shock you or damage the battery during this testing process, you should pay attention to connecting the correct probes or wires to the terminals on the battery.

Record the voltage reading:

The fourth step is to monitor the reading of the Voltmeter after you connect it.

For example, if you are testing a small lithium battery, you should get a reading between 3.5V and 4.2V, as this is the rated voltage for most high-quality lithium batteries. This indicates that the battery is new and still fully charged. If the Voltmeter shows that the voltage reading of the lithium battery is lower than 3.4 V, the battery has been used and needs to be charged or wholly replaced.

Additionally, you can still use a device called a multimeter, but you need to set it to voltage as it can also read amperes and ohms. You can also determine by measuring the capacity of the battery. Generally speaking, when the DOD of a lithium battery drops to 80%, it can be considered a scrapped battery.

But such batteries can continue to be used and will enter the market. So you can check the ratio of the actual capacity of the battery to the nominal capacity, which is DOD. If it is a brand-new battery, then the DOD should be 100%. You can also use a small battery tester to test small batteries or use a large tester for large car lithium batteries.
