How to Check a Car Alternator: For New and Old Cars

What Does the Alternator Do?

Think of the alternator as your car’s mini power station.
While the engine runs, it keeps your battery charged and powers everything from your lights to your phone charger.

What You’ll Need

  • A voltmeter or multimeter

  • Basic tools (wrench or pliers)

  • A few minutes and a safe place to park

Step 1: Check Battery Voltage (Engine Off)

  1. Turn the car off.

  2. Set your voltmeter to DC volts (20V range).

  3. Touch red probe to the positive terminal (+) and black to the negative (–).

If it reads around 12.5V, your battery is healthy. Anything below 12V means it’s weak or discharged.

Step 2: Start the Car (Engine On)

Now start the engine and measure again.
A healthy alternator should show 13.5V–14.8V on the meter.

  • If it stays low or drops, your alternator might not be charging properly.
  • If it jumps above 15V, it could be overcharging — which also isn’t good.

Step 3: Turn On Accessories

Turn on your headlights, A/C, and radio.
If the voltage stays steady, your alternator is doing great.
If it drops sharply or the lights flicker, your alternator is struggling — time for a checkup.

For Older Cars

Older cars usually have simple alternator systems, so you can easily spot issues like:

  • Loose or squealing belts

  • Dim lights

  • Clicking or whining noises

For New Cars

Modern cars have smart charging systems that adjust alternator output automatically.
If your battery light comes on, it could also be a sensor or software issue.
