HOW TO CHANGE EATING HABITS TO STOP CHANGING CLIMATE?

Recent scientific research has found that the most effective way to reduce your impact on the surrounding environment (reducing greenhouse gas emissions) is to avoid meat and milk products.

But how serious is the effect on the environment of eating beef or chicken?

Would eat a plate of potato chips instead of a bowl of rice or a dish made of rice result in fewer greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere? Is Wine a better choice for the atmosphere than beer?

According to research by the University of Oxford, a quarter of the greenhouse in the atmosphere comes from food production and is a major contributor to global warming.

However, researchers have found that different types of foods affect the environment differently.

According to the results found in the research, about half of the greenhouse gas emissions from food are due only to meat or other types of non-vegetarian food. But from such foods, we get only one-fifth of the calories we get from the total food.

Among the foods analyzed in the research, beef and lamb meat were found to be the most harmful to the environment.

  • 352m² of land, equal to 1 tennis court.

How was the calculator made?

Researchers Joseph Purr of the University of Oxford and Chorus Nemsek of Zurich's Agroecology and Environment Research Division, Switzerland, gathered information about the foods preferred in different parts of the world.

They selected 40 staple foods from these and tried to know about their effect on the environment.

They researched the effect of these foods on greenhouse gases that warm the Earth's atmosphere or contribute to climate change. Along with this, he also saw how much land and clean water are used in its production.

For this, they also analyzed the information gathered about 40,000 farms, 1,600 food production centers, packaging of food items.
