Finding a bicycle is relatively inexpensive - but there are so many types of products available, in so many different prices, that you have to do a little research before you go out and spend any money.

How Much Will You Pay?
Are you already on a bicycle, or have you just started sports? Do you intend to ride every day, or only on weekends? Do you have a safe place to store your bike if you do not use it?
These are all questions you should ask yourself before buying your first bike. If you have recently become interested in hiking in the mountains, you do not want to buy a bicycle for thousands of dollars until you are sure you will find its use. Of course there are 22 catch there. High quality bikes are so easy and fun that you will fall into one, and if you find a bad bike to start with it can be permanently sour in sports.
The best thing you can do is check-ride as many bikes as possible at different price points. Your local bike shop won't let you check out their bikes down the mountain - but you can rent bikes at the best places and try.
Where to buy
Any book or article you have read will advise you not to buy a bike from a major retailer like Wal-mart or Target. Why? Because they buy cheap bikes that they can sell for less, and the bikes are not well integrated. Even if you buy even the cheapest baby bike at the bike shop, it will be easier than the big market version, and the people in the store will make sure it fits your baby.
So, you can support your local bike shop or shop online. It’s usually best to shop at your bike shop to get started, as they can help you fit the bike and give you tips. If you have been riding for years and know what you need, buying online makes sense.
What will you buy?
You will ask yourself this question along with "how much will you pay." Also, it all depends on how much you expect to use the bike. If you plan to do a lot of cycling on a road trip from time to time, and only once when you go down a real mountain ... then you will not need a type of bike that looks like a bad person.
Mountain bikes come in two different types - solid tail and full suspension. A strong tail can hang on the front but not the back - hence the term "strong tail." Perfectly parked bikes are comfortable… but very expensive.
When to Buy?
Just as car dealers sell models at a discounted end of their sales season, so will bicycle shops. If you live in an area with a “winter season,” you will definitely see this winter sale.
So don’t be impatient ... but don’t deprive yourself of the kind of fun, either!
