How to Break Your bad habit 

 

In a new year we take resolution and make a list of bad habits we wanted to get rid of and then follow the conventional method of breaking old habits which eventually leads us to again fall back on that habit because of the lack of proper scientific knowledge of breaking bad habit. 

New researches have been taken place in the field of psychology to find out some practical methods to break the bad habits and to build a life in a way we want. 

 According to scientists, there are some rules to break the bad habits, and they suggest breaking the bad habit by following simple mantra that is “listening to your mind and body instead of going against them”. 

Given below are some simple rule suggested by scientists to break the bad habits: 

  • `Rule Number :1  

Incremental Change: According to scientists if one really wants to break the bad habit completely, then one should start by taking small steps rather than taking a big one and, the reason behind is that our mind and body tends to resist drastic changes as our brain perceives it as a threat which eventually create stress physically as well as mentally. 

So, if we want a permanent change, then we should give some time to our body and mind by starting with little changes so that our body and mind could easily adapt in response to new changes. 

Let say for example instead of starting with 1hr of exercise in the gym for weight loss we should try to perform 10 min exercise and then slowly moving step forward.

MindfulnessOne of the greatest ways to break the bad habit is to bring our awareness to the triggering factors, and writing all of them in a piece of a paper helps us to bring all our attention to the triggering factors. Let say you start to smoke when you feel very much stressed or to opt for junk food when you feel hungry, so in this way identifying the cause we can find alternatives to cope up with bad habits.

  • Rule Number: 3 

Reward Pathway Activation: According to scientist's the reward pathway in the human brain is the basis for human learning by providing pleasure and motivation through the release of dopamine neurotransmitter while engaging in any activity and this default setting of our brain to seek pleasure is fulfilled similarly by our bad habits that’s why it is very hard to break the bad habits. 

Now if one wants to really break the bad habit then we should use this pathway in a constructive way by indulging ourselves in those activities which are more rewarding let say for example following your hobbies, joining any sports club so that your brain could find dose of dopamine by alternative activity. 

  • Rule Number: 4 

Discussing Your Goal to Others: This is the very good method to break the bad habit because discussing your goals with other we feel sense of commitment to them as we are social being, so we get influenced by the way people think of us, therefore sometimes it becomes very hard for us to leave our goals, and even you could ask them to join in your resolution.
