How to become an IAS officer

The IAS full form is Indian Administrative Service. IAS officers are the backbone of Indian Bureaucracy. It is one of the most prestigious government jobs in India. IAS exam is all India level examination. It is a part of Civil Service Examination. IAS is one of the topmost services of the government. To become an IAS, one has to clear the UPSC exam that is conducted annually.

How to become an IAS officer

Age Limit : 

  • The minimum age criteria to appear for the UPSC CSE are 21 years of age.
  • The maximum age limit where a candidate can become an IAS officer for the general is 32 years.
  • And the maximum limit for the OBC category is 35 years.
  • Also, for of SC/ST category is 37 years.

Educational Qualification :

  1. To become an IAS officer,  the candidate should hold a graduation degree, from any recognized university.
  2. Even a candidate appearing for the final year of graduation can appear for this examination.
  3. Even professionals can apply for this particular examination.
  4. A medical student is also eligible to apply for this examination.
  5. A candidate who has passed CA, ICWA and ICSI are also eligible to apply for this examination.
  6. But only if he / she has completed the degree and undergoing an internship program.
  7. The candidates need to crack the Civil Service Examination (CSE) conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
  8. After passing the UPSC CSE exam, only an aspiring candidate can become an IAS officer.  

What is the UPSC CSE exam?

UPSC CSE exam is one of the toughest competitive exam in India. UPSC CSE exam takes places in three stages namely :

i) Preliminary exam,

ii) Main exam,

iii) Interview process.

i) Preliminary Exam

This exam consists of multiple-choice questions. And also has a negative of 0.33 marks as a penalty. The duration of the paper is of 2 hours with a total mark of 400.

Paper 2 

Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT)

ii) Main exam

After qualifying for the preliminary exam, the candidate is eligible for the main exam. Main exam is a descriptive type of exam. It includes a total of nine papers and total marks of 1750.

Essay on any topic,

Indian Heritage, Culture, Geography,

Constitution, Governance, Social Justice,

Technology, Environment, Disaster Management,

Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude

Indian language (Anyone of the language)

English language

iii) Interview Process

After passing the preliminary exam and main exam, a candidate is eligible for the last interview process. Only a few candidates reached this final round. After qualifying and cracking the interview, the candidate becomes an IAS officer.

During the interview, subjective personal skills, as well as the mental ability of the candidate, are checked. After the selection of the candidate, he is given the training and posted accordingly.

How to fill UPSC form :

  • Visit the official website of UPSC,  www.upsc.gov.in
  • Click on online application of  various examination.
  • Choose service Civil Service Examination - Preliminary exam.
  • Now, start registering with IAS Part - 1.
  • Fill up your personal details.
  • Choose your convenient exam center.
  • Upload your recent passport size photograph.
  • Upload your digital signature and Identity card.
  • Accept the Declaration by clicking on Agree button.
  • Lastly, click on the SUBMIT button.

Number of Attempts:

  • For the general category, the candidate is limited to 6 attempts.
  • And for that off OBC, the candidate has a limit of 9 attempts.

Role and Responsibility of an IAS officer : 

  1. To frame important policy and discharge it. To advise the ministers.
  2. To advise the ministers about important matters.
  3. Maintain the law and order of the citizens.
  4. Implementation of important policies and decisions.
  5. Collection of revenues. 
  6. Supervisor of various expenses. 
  7. Take important decision whatever necessary and frame policies accordingly.
  8. To look after the implementation of those policies.
