How to become a successful salesperson? A quick step by step guide

Selling is one of the most highly paid jobs of the current era. The world is full of successful salespeople who are rich and famous in their own lines of business. The monetary reward is pretty good however, the psychological reward is way bigger than the money you make. It gives you confidence and meaning. It makes you like yourself and subsequently live a happy and fulfilled life.

Following are some steps to becoming successful in the field of selling

1. Understand your life goals and set up your sales career in accordance with your life goals

The first step is to introspect to see what objectives you have in your life. You should ask yourself questions like, "What is my passion in life?", " How can I make my passion my job" or "What kind of lifestyle do I aspire to achieve?". Once you determine this goal, the next question you ask yourself is, "How am I going to sell my passion to the world?".

2. Once you have decided on your passion, now think of which organizations are aligned with your passion

Now that you have decided about your passion, it's time to find like-minded people or organizations. For example, if you like Real Estate, you try and find organizations that can be your starting point. It can be individuals selling Real Estate or agencies who are involved in making big bucks by selling development projects. Try to join them or at least work with them as an affiliate or trainee to learn the basics

3. Once you know the basics, set your selling goals.

Setting your selling goals is the logical next step. Write it in front of you, on a board, or on a wall, the Gross Market Value (GMV) target for the month or quarter. Also, write the commission you aim to get out of your sales. Set a clear objective, no BS.

4. Now starts the hard part, Generating leads

For example, you have invested yourself in real estate. Now you won't be able to start if you do not have leads. There can be a lot of ways of getting leads for inventory to sell (i.e. plots, houses, apartments) and potential buyers of these properties. Some of the methods are given below

  1. Use your contacts to spread the word that you are in the business
  2. Set up your social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, etc.
  3. Make introductory videos of yourself as a serious contender in the business
  4. Go to network events and gather contacts
  5. Roam around your town looking for sale signs to contact the sellers

5. Develop a killer sales pitch

Once you have the inventory to sell, develop a sales pitch. Sales Pitch is a verbal or visual manifestation of the dream you want to sell. A good sales pitch should have most of the following:

  1. Clarity of the current and future value of the product
  2. Features and benefits of the product for the potential buyer
  3. Emotional and psychological anchors for the potential buyers
  4. The downside of not buying the product now
  5. Design a virtual view of how the life will be after the client buys this product

6. Test the sales pitch and adjust

The time has come to test the sales pitch on your clients. You might get negative feedback. Don't worry, adjust the pitch accordingly. Call, message, and meet your prospects. Followup, re-pitch and readjust until the pitch becomes perfect. Know that one pitch is not for everyone. Change it for different types of people. Some people have a practical view, show them the benefits. Some people have emotional triggers, tell them stories of what your product can do for you emotionally. Don't worry, you will get a hang of it later.

7. Decide your closing strategy

Now that pitch has been given and the client has shown interest, go in hard. Select a closing strategy. Depending on the client type, decide how you will approach the closing. Ask them how they will pay. You can inquire if there is a problem with the budget. Give them advice, on how to get the investment from financial institutions. Help him reach the decision. As him to sign the check or token money or however he wants to pay.

8. Land the client and move on

When you finally get the dotted line signed, follow up on the logistics of the process. Do the documentation and due diligence. Ensure the financial transactions are done. Deliver on the promise, thank the client and get ready to move on. This was just one sale. You have to do it again and again and again till infinity.

9. Celebrate the success

Selling is a tough task. Getting it done is one feat. Do not forget to celebrate. Enjoy your success. Treat yourself, announce your achievement and seek motivation for the amazing work you are doing.

10. Repeat the sweet madness

Do remember to tell yourself that the same cycle has to happen again. You will have good days and bad days but the life of a salesperson goes on. Just stay tuned and repeat the amazing process of selling.
